𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 gehören zu jenen Bands, die seit über vier Jahrzehnten unermüdlich Musik machen. Als Pioniere und Mitgestalter des Thrash Metal gestartet, haben sie im Laufe ihrer Karriere immer wieder experimentiert; nicht immer mit einem durchschlagenden Ergebnis. Der ganz große kommerzielle Durchbruch blieb, anders als bei einigen ihrer Weggefährten, merkwürdigerweise aus.

Seit The End Of Chaos jedoch hat die Band eine andere stilistische Richtung eingeschlagen: Sie verschmelzen ihren energischen Thrash‑Sound zunehmend mit kraftvollen Power‑ und Heavy‑Metal‑Elementen. Die Songs wurden melodischer und ausgefeilte. Diese Entwicklung prägt 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 in ihrer modernen Phase.

𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 haben sich übrigens von ihrem langjährigen Label AFM Records getrennt und deshalb ist das kommende Album 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 das Debüt bei ihrem neuen Label Napalm Records. Es wird am 28. August erscheinen. Beginnen möchte ich gleich am besten mit Titeltrack, der vorab auch als Single veröffentlicht wurde.

Auch der Song „Rats In The Temple“ setzt die Entwicklung konsequent fort. Der Song zeigt direkt zu Beginn die Zähne. Besonders hat es mir das Drumming in diesem Song angetan, was hier mit einer beeindruckenden Dynamik für viel Feuer sorgt. Ken Mary ist echt ne Wucht. Das fällt mir immer wieder auf.

Gleich zum Einstieg gibt es ebenfalls ein geiles Gitarrensolo obendrauf und dann startet der Song voll durch. Der Gittarist ist voll on fire und brilliert hier mit tollen Leads und Solos. Ein technisch höchst anspruchsvoller Banger, der aber mächtig durchzündet. Den würde ich gerne live sehen, am besten noch mit einem eingebauten Drum Solo. Würde ich voll abfeiern.

Es ist keine Überraschung, dass Bands ihr neuestes Album vorab in den höchsten Tönen loben. Alles andere wäre auch komisch. Wer bringt schon ein Album raus, von dem man nicht überzeugt ist. Dementsprechend ist Frontmann Eric A.K. Knutson ist jedenfalls Feuer und Flamme:

Diese Platte ist ein BIEST – wahrlich unser bisher bestes Werk!! Tut euch selbst einen Gefallen: Dimmt das Licht, schnappt euch einen Drink, setzt die Kopfhörer auf und dreht die Lautstärke voll auf. Ihr werdet es nicht bereuen!!!

Es wird also viel im Vorfeld versprochen und hören wir mal, ob die anderen Songs das Niveau vom Titeltrack halten können. Der Opener „Harvesting The Hate“ hält sich auch nicht lange mit Vorgeplänkel auf, sondern knallt heftig rein, der auf dem gewohnt hohen Qualitätsniveau von 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 agiert, nicht mehr und nicht weniger.

Und 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 haben sich mit dem Opener nur warmgespielt, denn die nächsten Songs bringen eine Steigerung mit sich, die noch mehr Energie explodieren lässt. Was die Rhythmusfraktion mit Drummer Ken Mary und Bassist Bill Bodily hier rausballert, ist aller Ehren wert. Die entfesseln eine Dynamik, die ihresgleichen sucht und die Flammen des Feuers mächtig tanzen lässt. Sänger Eric A.K. Knutson ballert ebenfalls mit Power seine Vocals raus.

So ist „Absolution“ ein schnelles fieses Geschoss, was sich seinen Weg bahn und ne Menge Schaden anrichtet. Mir gefällt an diesem Song die schlichtere Struktur. So ballert „Absolution“ kompromisslos nach vorne ohne sich groß mit anderen Dingen aufzuhalten. Das hat schon so ein wenig old school Vibes. Jedenfalls ist „Absolution“ ein durchschlagender Song, der dich mit Energie vollpumpt.

„Blame The Knife“ ist nicht so schnell, aber hält trotzdem feste Schläge bereit. Er ist ein wenig atmosphärischer und rhythmisch etwas komplexer ausgearbeitet. Bisher gefallen mir auf 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 die unterschiedlichen Ansätze in den Songs, die unterschiedlich funktionieren, aber immer den nötigen Punch haben.

„The Ghost Behind My Door“ ist der erste Song mit starken Power Metal Vibes, was durch den melodisch epischen Anstrich im Refrain aufkommt. Ein schöner und zugleich kraftvoller Song ist es allemal, garniert einem wundervollen Gitarrensolo. Es ist ebenfalls ein starker Song, der für angenehme Abwechslung im Albumkonzept sorgt. Etwas schärfer geht es bei „The Edge Of Nowhere“ zur Sache, der zwischen atmosphärischen Zwischensequenzen und prügelnden Angriffen pendelt.

Auf 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 gibt es keine schlechten Songs. 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 halten ihre Durchschlagskraft bis zum Ende durch und servieren starke Songs, die schlichtweg gut gemacht sind. Hier möge sich jeder seine Favoriten selber krönen. Ich kann mich tatsächlich kaum entscheiden. 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 lässt sich super von vorne bis hinten durchhören. Besonders aufgefallen ist mir noch bei dem Antikriegssong „A Taste Of War“ das einducksvolle Intro, wo auch der warme Bass stark hervorkommt. Der Song spart auch nicht mit anklagender Aggression, die sich mit sanfteren melancholisch angehauchten Passagen abwechseln.

Fazit

𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 liefern mit 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 wieder einmal grandios ab. Mit einer beeindruckenden Kontinuität an qualitativ hochwertiger Musik beweisen sie ein ums andere Mal, was für eine tolle Band sie sind. Dabei sind sie technisch ebenfalls virtuos unterwegs und bieten 13 bärenstarke Songs an, die voller Power, aber auch von Kreativität geprägt sind sind und das Können der Band in verschiedenen Bereichen wunderbar ausleuchten.

Wenn man das in Form von Punkten bewerten möchte, dann sollte man schon fair bleiben und die Band nicht an ihren frühen Werken messen. 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 haben sich entwickelt, so wie andere Bands auch, und sie machen das, wohin der Weg sie führt. Ich komme damit super klar! Wenn ich old school Thrash hören möchte, gibt es genügend (Nachwuchs-)Bands, die mir das liefern.

𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 are among those bands that have been making music tirelessly for over four decades. They started out as pioneers in thrash metal. Unlike some of their contemporaries, however, they strangely never achieved a massive commercial breakthrough.

However, since The End Of Chaos, the band has pursued a specific stylistic direction: they are increasingly fusing their energetic thrash sound with powerful elements of power and heavy metal. The songs have become more melodic and refined. This evolution defines 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 in their modern era.

Incidentally, 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 have parted ways with their longtime label, AFM Records; consequently, the upcoming album 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 marks their debut with their new label, Napalm Records. It is set for release on August 28th. I’d like to start right off with the title track, which was also released beforehand as a single.

The song „Rats In The Temple“ consistently continues this evolution. It bares its teeth right from the very beginning. I was particularly impressed by the drumming on this track; it drives the song with impressive dynamics and real fire. Ken Mary is an absolute powerhouse. That strikes me time and again.

There’s a killer guitar solo right at the start, too, before the song kicks into high gear. The guitarist is truly on fire, shining with fantastic leads and solos. It’s a technically demanding banger that packs a massive punch. I’d love to see this performed live, ideally with a built-in drum solo. That would be an absolute blast for me.

It comes as no surprise that bands heap praise on their latest album before its release. Anything else would be odd, after all—who would release an album they didn’t believe in? Accordingly, frontman Eric A.K. Knutson is certainly fired up about it:

This record is a BEAST, truly our best effort to date!! Do yourself a favor. Dim the lights, grab a drink, put the headphones on, and crank this up. You will not be sorry you did!!!

So, there are big promises made upfront. Let’s see if the other songs can match the standard set by the title track. The opener „Harvesting The Hate“ wastes no time on preamble but hits hard, operating at the consistently high level of quality expected from 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌—nothing more, nothing less.

And 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 were merely warming up with the opener; the subsequent tracks ramp things up, unleashing an even greater explosion of energy. The rhythm section, drummer Ken Mary and bassist Bill Bodily, delivers a performance worthy of high praise. They unleash a dynamic force that is second to none, making the flames dance wildly. Vocalist Eric A.K. Knutson also belts out his vocals with tremendous power.

„Absolution“ is a fast, vicious missile of a track that tears its way forward, wreaking havoc. I appreciate the song’s simpler structure; „Absolution“ charges ahead uncompromisingly without getting bogged down in unnecessary details. It definitely has a bit of an old-school vibe. In any case, „Absolution“ is a hard-hitting track that pumps you full of energy.

„Blame The Knife“ isn’t quite as fast, yet it still packs a heavy punch. It is somewhat more atmospheric and rhythmically complex. So far, I really like the varied approaches found on 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚; the songs work in different ways but always deliver the necessary impact.

„The Ghost Behind My Door“ is the first track with strong Power Metal vibes, driven by the melodic, epic feel of the chorus. It is a beautiful yet powerful song, topped off with a wonderful guitar solo. It’s another strong track that adds a welcome touch of variety to the album. Things get a bit more aggressive with „The Edge Of Nowhere“, which oscillates between atmospheric interludes and pummeling assaults.

There isn’t a bad song on 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚. 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 maintain their impact right to the end, delivering strong tracks that are simply well-crafted. I’ll leave it to everyone to pick their own favorites. I honestly find it hard to choose. 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 is a fantastic album to listen to from start to finish. The anti-war song „A Taste of War“ particularly stood out to me, especially its impressive intro, where the warm bass really shines. The track doesn’t hold back on accusatory aggression, either, alternating with softer, melancholic passages.

Conclusion

With 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚, 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 once again deliver a magnificent performance. Demonstrating impressive consistency in producing high-quality music, they prove time and again what a fantastic band they are. Displaying technical virtuosity, they offer 13 powerhouse tracks that are brimming with both energy and creativity, brilliantly showcasing the band’s diverse capabilities.

If you want to rate this using a points system, you really ought to be fair and not judge the band by their early work. 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 & 𝐉𝐄𝐓𝐒𝐀𝐌 have evolved, just like other bands, and they follow the path wherever it leads them. I’m totally fine with that! If I want to listen to old-school thrash, there are plenty of bands (including underground bands) that deliver exactly that.
