Die italienische Power Metal Band 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 gehören für mich zu den Top-Bands im Bereich Power Metal. Das letzte Album The Gates Of The Underworld für mich eines der besten Alben 2023. Warum?

The Gates Of The Underworld ist für mich nichts weniger als ein effektreiches episches Epos, das von erlesener Qualität ist und mit viel handwerklichem Können in jedem Bereich beeindruckend ist. Daher bin ich so unglaublich gespannt, was die Italiener auf ihrem neuen Album 𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 präsentieren werden. Noch besser können sie es eigentlich nicht machen, aber das muss ja auch gar nicht sein, denn dieses Niveau zu halten wäre völlig ausreichend.

Das Line Up hat sich offenbar an zwei Positionen verändert. Am Keybord haut nun Paolo Campitelli in die Tasten und an den Drums prügelt Paolo Conte auf die Felle. Jetzt bin ich natürlich gespannt, was Paolo Campitelli für Klänge aus dem Keybord zaubert, weil gerade auch das Keybordspiel mich auf The Gates Of The Underworld total begeistert.

Die Reise startet mit „The Only Way“, dessen melodische und orchestrale Schichten sich sofort klar und einladend entfalten. Auch die rhythmische Wucht ist schon spürbar, sodass der Track als atmosphärisch stimmiger Auftakt funktioniert. Mit „Convicted To Rise“ zieht die Band jedoch spürbar an. Der Song wirkt entschlossener und druckvoller als der Opener, und setzt damit jene Akzente, die ich an 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 sehr schätze.

„Conicted To Rise“ beginnt brachial, mit voller Power. Danach öffnet sich der Song in einen melodisch getragenen Part, in dem das Stück epischen Charme aufbaut und Sänger Francesco den Raum gibt, um seine stimmliche Klasse auszuspielen. Ein knackiger Härtegrad bleibt dem Song aber erhalten.

Ich fiebere auf den Solopart hin, denn die Gitarrensolos im Zusammenspiel mit den Keybordsolos waren ebenfalls echte Highlights auf dem letzten Album. Auch hier lassen sich 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 nicht lumpen und liefern nach der Keybordeinlage ein traumhaftes Gitarrensolo. Zum Ende schließt man den Kreis zum harten Songeinstieg und finalisiert den Song mit einer headbanger-tauglichen Härte. Im Ergebnis wieder eine strahlende Performance, die Lust auf das Album macht.

Bereits nach den ersten Songs wird deutlich, dass 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 ihr beeindruckendes Niveau mühelos bestätigen. Die Band agiert souverän auf Augenhöhe mit Größen wie Kamelot, die im selben modernen Prog-Power-Kosmos unterwegs sind. Hier wird musikalisches Handwerk auf höchstem Niveau geboten: detailverliebt und kraftvoll.

Als Freund dunkler, härterer Klangfarben begrüße ich die Akzente, wie man es z.B. im Song „Cold Flames“ einbringt. Der Song hat schon einen echt starken Einstieg und lässt keinen Stein auf dem anderen. Sänger Francesco Marino performt erwartungsgemäß grandios. Fantastische Stimme, die nicht nur melodisch völlig überzeugt.

Ab 03:20 setzt er einige kraftvolle, dunklere Akzente, die hervorragend funktionieren. Leider sind diese Ausbrüche, wie beim letzten Album, nur Randerscheinungen. Doch 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 zeigen, mit welchem Potential sie arbeiten und welches Ausdrucksspektrum abrufen können, um viele emotionale Ebenen zu bedienen.

𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 bleiben jedoch gesanglich meist im melodischen Bereich, obgleich viele Songs, wie beispielsweise auch „Echoes From The Abyss“, instrumental mächtig Krawall machen. Bewundern kann man hier wieder das grandiose Zusammenspiel zwischen Keyborder und Gitarrist beim Solopart.

Trotz der gesanglichen Brillanz hätte ich mir stellenweise noch mehr Mut zu aggressiveren, kraftvolleren stimmlichen Akzenten gewünscht. Genau solche Momente verleihen dem Sound zusätzliche Tiefe. Die kraftvolle Ballade „Heavenfall“ gewinnt beispielsweise enorm an Wirkung, als sie bei 3:25 Minuten eine kurze, aber markante düstere Wendung nimmt und so einen subtilen, doch effektiven Kontrastpunkt setzt. Im Vergleich dazu wirkt „Through Your Light“, trotz des gelungenen epischen Charakters, insgesamt etwas zu zurückhaltend und setzt stattdessen eher auf tragende und schmeichelnde Melodien.

„The Viper’s Nest“ ist ein weiterer Song, der die beeindruckende Stärke der Band unterstreicht. Das Stück lädt sowohl zum Staunen als auch zum Genießen ein und überzeugt zugleich mit echten Headbanger-Momenten. Die Mischung aus technischer Präzision, melodischer Vielfalt und treibender Härte spricht für sich. Doch überzeugt euch am besten selbst …

Fazit

Mit 𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 unterstreichen 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 eindrucksvoll ihren hohen Anspruch und liefern ein modernes Prog-Power-Metal-Album ab, das technische Präzision, melodische Brillanz und orchestrale Weite meisterhaft vereint. 𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 ist ein Album, das sowohl Liebhaber melodischer Eleganz als auch Fans härteren, druckvollen Power Metals anspricht. 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 beweisen damit, dass sie längst zur Riege der Genre-Größen gehören, und schaffen wahrhaft großartige Kompositionen.

Auch wenn ich mir an manchen Stellen mehr Hingabe zu dunkleren, kraftvolleren Gesangsmomenten für mehr emotionale Kontraste gewünscht hätte, überzeugen 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 mit einem strukturell durchdachten, handwerklich starken Album.

The Italian power metal band 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 are, for me, among the absolute elite. Their 2023 album The Gates Of The Underworld was one of the best releases of that year. Why?

The Gates Of The Underworld is nothing less than a highly effective, epic opus of exquisite quality, crafted with outstanding musicianship in every respect and consistently impressive throughout. That’s why I’m incredibly excited to see what the Italians will deliver on their new album. They can hardly top it, but they don’t need to. Simply maintaining that level would already be more than enough.

The line-up appears to have changed in two positions: Paolo Campitelli now takes over the keyboards, and Paolo Conte is behind the drums. I’m especially curious to hear what Campitelli will conjure from the keys, since the keyboard work on The Gates Of The Underworld absolutely captivated me.

The journey begins with „The Only Way“, as its melodic and orchestral layers unfold in a clear and inviting manner right from the start. The rhythmic power is also immediately palpable, making the track an atmospherically cohesive opener. However, with „Convicted To Rise“, the band noticeably kicks things up a notch. The song feels more determined and forceful than the opener, delivering the kind of impact I really appreciate about 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀.

“Convicted To Rise” begins in a brachial, full‑power fashion. It then opens into a melodically driven section that lends the track an epic charm and gives vocalist Francesco room to showcase his vocal prowess. Despite the melodic breadth, the song retains a crisp level of heaviness.

I’m eagerly anticipating the solo section, since the interplay between guitar solos and keyboard solos was a major highlight on the last album. Once again, 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 don’t hold back: after a strong keyboard passage, they deliver a gorgeous guitar solo. In the end, the band closes the circle and returns to the song’s hard‑hitting opening, finishing with headbanger‑ready intensity. The result is another radiant performance that builds excitement for the album.

It becomes clear after just the first few songs that 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 effortlessly maintains its impressive standard. The band operates confidently on a par with heavyweights like KAMELOT, who inhabit the same modern prog-power cosmos. What is on display here is musicianship of the highest level: powerful and rich in detail.

As a fan of darker, heavier tones, I welcome the accents introduced in tracks like „Cold Flames“. The song gets off to a truly powerful start and pulls out all the stops. Vocalist Francesco Marino delivers a magnificent performance, as expected—a fantastic voice that impresses not only with its melodic quality.

At the 3:20 mark, he adds some powerful, darker touches that work brilliantly. Unfortunately, much like on the previous album, these outbursts are merely sporadic moments. Nevertheless, 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 demonstrate the potential they possess and the range of expression they can tap into to convey a multitude of emotional layers.

However, vocally, 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 generally stays within the melodic realm, even though many songs, such as „Echoes From The Abyss“, pack a massive instrumental punch. Once again, the superb interplay between the keyboardist and the guitarist during the solo section is truly impressive.

For all the vocal brilliance, I could still envision a greater commitment to more aggressive, powerful vocal accents. It is precisely such moments that lend the sound added depth. The powerful ballad „Heavenfall“, for instance, gains palpable impact when it takes a brief but striking dark turn at the 3:25 mark, creating a subtle yet effective point of contrast. By comparison, „Through Your Light“, despite its successful epic feel, comes across as somewhat too restrained overall, relying instead on sweeping, pleasing melodies.

“The Viper’s Nest” is another track that underscores the band’s impressive strength. It is a piece that invites both awe and enjoyment, while striking with genuine headbanging intensity along the way. The blend of technical precision, melodic scope, and driving heaviness speaks for itself. But feel free to convince yourself…

Conclusion

With 𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧, 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 impressively reaffirm their high standards, delivering a modern prog-power metal album that masterfully blends technical precision, melodic brilliance, and orchestral scope. 𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 is an album that appeals to both connoisseurs of melodic elegance and fans of harder, high-impact power metal. 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 prove that they have long since joined the ranks of the genre’s heavyweights, creating truly magnificent compositions.

Even though I would have liked to see more commitment to darker, more powerful vocal moments in places, to create greater emotional contrast, 𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 deliver a structurally well-conceived album that is impressive in its craftsmanship.
