New folk metal is rising from Finland! With an epic song, the band VETTEN ÄPÄRÄT ignites a great and mighty fire of life with the song „Äiti“.
The new song „Äiti“ (english: Mother) tells the story of a child growing up in a brutal domestic environment and escaping into a fantasy world to protect their mind from traumatic experiences that would simply be too overwhelming for any child.
The upcoming second album, 𝙑𝙞𝙧𝙠𝙤𝙨 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣 𝙆𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙖, continues the fantasy themes and thoughtful metaphors already established on the band’s debut, Syntyi Talven Kyynelistä (2016), focusing on the harsh Nordic wilderness and man’s desperate struggle to subjugate it.
Although the album announced for 2027 does not yet reveal any concrete details, the new song is thrilling all around, even though I miss the folk presence a bit in the sound. The visual design of the video fits perfectly, but for me, folk metal also involves the use of historical instruments. I miss these here, although the catchy melodies and the Finnish vocals certainly create a folkloristic atmosphere. Musically, the track is arranged absolutely excellently. It is full of details and unfolds like a multi-layered story with varied moods and atmospheric facets.
I will continue to follow VETTEN ÄPÄRÄT and should there be any news, you will find out here.
