TUNGSTEN sind eine bemerkenswerte Band aus Schweden, die 2019 ihr Debüt 𝙒𝙚 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙍𝙞𝙨𝙚 veröffentlicht haben. Danach folgten die Alben 𝙏𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙧𝙖 (2020) und 𝘽𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙨 (2022). Mit ihrem ursprünglichen musikalischen Stil haben sie mittlerweile nicht mehr so viel gemein. Denn sie habe eine beeindruckende Entwicklung durchgemacht und einen individuellen Sound entwickelt, der sehr modern ausgerichtet ist, der viele Stile in sich vereint und auch ein wenig verrückt ist.

Daher war das letzte Album 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄𝙣𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙤 (2024) ein großer Schritt in der Entwicklung. Sie haben einen Sound voller Kontraste, die es wirklich in sich haben. Und sie kommen auf die verrücktesten Ideen, so auch bei der aktuellen Single „Joker“. Ich hätte bei TUNGSTEN fast alles erwartet, aber Jodeln in einem Metalsong war für mich jedenfalls nicht auf der Liste. Ja, es ist völlig irre, was TUNGSTEN hier wieder abliefern. Dieser verrückte Mix hat tatsächlich Charme und übt bei mir einen unwiderstehlichen Reiz aus. Alles in allem ist der Song wieder super eingängig und macht schlichtweg einfach volle Kanne Spaß.

Wie kommt man auf so eine Idee? Darauf hat Gitarrist Nick Johansson folgende Geschichte parat:

Im Jahr 2015 stieß ich rein zufällig auf ein Video von Franzl Lang. Ich war zutiefst beeindruckt davon, wie wahnsinnig gut er jodeln konnte, und so legte ich eine kurze „Franzl-Phase“ ein. Nicht lange darauf stand ich an einem See mit perfektem Echo und beschloss, mich selbst einmal im Jodeln zu versuchen. Es klang natürlich absolut furchtbar, doch ich hatte die Technik sofort verstanden. Seither habe ich nur hin und wieder zum Spaß gejodelt. Irgendwie hat sich mein Jodeln – nach fast zehn Jahren des zwanglosen Herumjodelns – ganz von allein und still und heimlich verbessert.

Das neue Album „Ashes“ wird leider erst am 9. Oktober via Perception erscheinen, die ein Teil der Reigning Phoenix Music Gruppe sind. Bis dahin werden sicherlich noch einige Singles erscheinen und ich wette darauf, dass TUNGSTEN noch einige Überraschungen auf Lager haben.

TUNGSTEN are a remarkable band from Sweden who released their debut 𝙒𝙚 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙍𝙞𝙨𝙚 in 2019. This was followed by the albums 𝙏𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙧𝙖 (2020) and 𝘽𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙨(2022). By now, they have little in common with their original musical style. Over the years, they have undergone an impressive evolution and developed a distinctive sound that is strikingly modern, blending a wide range of influences and carrying a touch of madness.

That’s why their latest album 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄𝙣𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙤 (2024) marked a major leap in their evolution. They now command a sound full of contrasts, and those contrasts hit hard. And they keep coming up with the wildest ideas, as shown by their current single “Joker”. I would have expected almost anything from TUNGSTEN, but yodeling in a metal song definitely wasn’t on my list. Yes, it’s absolutely insane what TUNGSTEN are delivering once again. Yet this crazy mix has real charm and an irresistible appeal for me. All in all, the song is incredibly catchy and, quite simply, an absolute blast.

How do you even come up with an idea like that? Guitarist Nick Johansson has the following story to tell:

In 2015 I randomly stumbled across a clip of Franzl Lang. I was seriously impressed by how insanely good he was at yodeling, so I went through a short Franzl phase. Not long after that I was standing by a lake with a perfect echo and decided to try a little yodel myself. It sounded absolutely terrible, of course but, I immediately understood the technique. Since then I’ve only yodeled for fun now and then. Somehow, after almost 10 years of casual nonsense-yodeling, it has quietly improved on its own.

The new album 𝘼𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙨 unfortunately won’t be released until October 9 via Perception, which is part of the Reigning Phoenix Music group. Until then, we can expect several more singles. And I’m willing to bet that TUNGSTEN still have plenty of surprises up their sleeve.
