Daran erinnert mich der Song „For Thee“.

𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 aren’t the kind of band to just coast on a proven formula and put it on repeat. Ever since their 2019 debut We Will Rise, followed by Tundra (2020) and Bliss (2022), the Swedish crew has been constantly pushing their boundaries. With their latest material, they’re sounding way more modern, adventurous, and versatile than in their early days. Their sound packs a killer mix of influences, boasting a pleasantly unpredictable—and at times delightfully unhinged—edge.

The Grand Inferno (2024) was already a huge step forward for the Swedes. By now, 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 have dialed in a style that proudly flips the bird to any neat little genre boxes. They seamlessly blend all kinds of influences, constantly dropping wild ideas nobody in their right mind would’ve seen coming.

Here is a translation that captures that punchy, rock-magazine swagger:

„Joker“ is the ultimate proof, kicking off 𝘼𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙨 with easily one of the most bizarre intros you’ll hear on a modern metal record. To be honest, I expected a lot of things from 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍, but yodeling was definitely not on my bingo card. What sounds like a completely batshit idea at first quickly develops a charm of its own. The track hooks you instantly, packs a massive punch, and radiates that exact brand of quirky brilliance that makes 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 so special these days.

How on earth do you even come up with something like that? Guitarist Nick Johansson has quite the story to tell about it:

In 2015 I randomly stumbled across a clip of Franzl Lang. I was seriously impressed by how insanely good he was at yodeling, so I went through a short Franzl phase. Not long after that I was standing by a lake with a perfect echo and decided to try a little yodel myself. It sounded absolutely terrible, of course but, I immediately understood the technique. Since then I’ve only yodeled for fun now and then. Somehow, after almost 10 years of casual nonsense-yodeling, it has quietly improved on its own.

Right out of the gate, 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 make it crystal clear they’ve always got a few wild tricks up their sleeve. The Swedes have turned throwing curveballs into a fine art, relentlessly obliterating every neat little genre box you try to cram them into. Naturally, with a sound this unapologetically weird, you’re gonna split the room—you either love it or you just don’t get it. Personally, I’ve got a real soft spot for crazy ideas, so 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 and I get along just fine, even if not every single track lands a knockout punch. On Ashes, for instance, „Supernova“ oder „Sunshine Of Fall“ leaves me kind of cold, especially when stacked up against absolute bangers like „Joker“ or „Bite My Tongue“.

„Bite My Tongue“ brings the heat with sheer energy and massive hooks. The track feels like an absolute emotional rollercoaster, slinging the listener back and forth between killer catchiness and raw aggression. The vocal performance really steals the show here—soaring, sing-along melodies suddenly give way to harsh, dark vocals that give the whole thing an extra razor-sharp edge.

According to vocalist Mike Andersson, the lyrics explore „how people often voice their opinions about various things loudly without hesitation, but when you hold a different view, it’s sometimes better to stay silent to keep the peace which can be quite frustrating at times.”

Looking at the big picture, though, I gotta admit that 2024’s The Grand Inferno grabbed me a bit harder. On Ashes, I sometimes get the vibe that 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 were hell-bent on letting every single wild whim and crazy idea fly, no matter what. The result is a total grab bag of sweet and spicy surprises—though to be fair, the sweet treats definitely take the lion’s share. 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 deliver a full-on blockbuster popcorn ride crammed with infectious hooks and flashy ideas. Personally, I just prefer a slightly spicier mix with more nachos and chilis. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still a decent serving of heat, just in a somewhat lighter dose.

Back in the day, 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 played power metal with the occasional folk twist, and “For Thee” is a huge throwback to that era. The Swedes’ classic power metal roots still shine through here and there—sometimes subtle, sometimes loud and proud. The closing track, “The Forge“, is another absolute powerhouse of a metal anthem, driving forward with massive, punchy riffs in the verses before soaring high on melodious wings in the chorus.

Hands down, my absolute favorite has to be “The North Will Rise“, featuring Tony Kakko from SONATA ARCTICA. This one is a pure, unadulterated power metal banger—high-speed, full-steam-ahead drive, an epic chorus, and a glorious solo to top it all off.

Conclusion

On their new album 𝘼𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙨, 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 take things up a notch—especially when it comes to their urge to experiment. 𝘼𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙨 drops a wild mix of tracks, bridging their entire musical backstory with brand-new and delightfully weird territories. Compared to their last record, though, 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 have definitely sacrificed a bit of their heavy edge. Sure, the heavy firepower still flashes through here and there, but it’s clearly taken a backseat to catchy, melody-driven songwriting.

That said, 𝘼𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙨 remains an entertaining ride that offers blockbuster popcorn cinema from start to finish. Sure, it lacks a clear concept or a cohesive thread—which is both their biggest strength and, at times, a bit confusing. Personally, I would’ve loved a bigger serving of nachos and chilis, but if you’re sucker for creative twists, killer melodies, and a healthy dose of madness, you’ll feel right at home here. Not every single musical gamble hits the mark, but you’ve gotta give 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍 serious props for having the guts to just do their own thing. It’s crazy, over-the-top at times, and doesn’t always hit the bullseye, but that’s precisely what makes it so damn loveable.
