𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐆𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 sind beliebte Shooting Stars der Szene. Mit ihrem erfrischenden eingängigen Metal-Coctail treffen sie den Geschmack vieler Fans und können sich deshalb bereits über eine große Fangemeinde freuen, obwohl sie sich erst 2022 gegründet haben. Ein Jahr später erschien ihr Debüt „Guns For Hire“, was schon ziemlich gut war und einige verdammt gute Kracher offenbarte. Darüber hinaus ist man schon im Hause des Major-Labels Napalm Records untergekommen, was sicherlich für die Karriere keinen Nachteil darstellt.

Ich hatte vor kurzem das kommende Album „Violent Horror Stories“ von der griechischen Band LEATHERHEAD rezensiert (Review). Beide Bands spielen traditionellen Heavy Metal und unterscheiden sich dann doch in der Umsetzung. LEATHERHEAD entfesseln einen Sturm mit roher Energie und unbändiger Wildheit, während 𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐆𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 den Focus auf eingängige Hymnen legen, aber auch sie sind energiegeladen, nur eben etwas kontrollierter.

Eine Luftschutzsirene kündigt den musikalischen Angriff an und schon geht es los mit dem furiosen Titeltrack „Midnight Blitz“. Der Song hat ordentlich Pfeffer im Arsch und zeigt sofort, wie viel selbstbewusster die Band inzwischen agiert. Im direkten Vergleich wirkt das etwas müde eröffnende „Shadows of War“ vom Debüt fast wie ein Aufwärmprogramm. Hier dagegen herrscht sofort Alarmstufe Rot: hohes Tempo, knackiger Härtegrad, eine Leadgitarre, die sich ein ausgedehntes Solofest gönnt. Das macht richtig Laune und packt den Hörer ohne Umwege. Ein Einstieg, der keine Fragen offenlässt.

Direkt im Anschluss zeigen 𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐆𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 mit „Tears in Rain“, dass sie nicht nur Druck, sondern auch Größe beherrschen. Der Refrain ist eine dieser melodischen Eingebungen, die sofort hängen bleiben; episch schön, ohne ins Kitschige abzurutschen. Der Härtegrad fährt hier etwas runter, dafür bekommt der Bass mehr Raum und schiebt die Strophen mit warmem Fundament nach vorne. Was sich allerdings konsequent durch das gesamte Album zieht, sind die fantastischen Gitarrensoli. Die Band zelebriert diese Momente durch die doppelte Gitarrenschlagkraft (Rhea Thompson & Zach Salvini) mit einer Selbstverständlichkeit, die man in dieser Konsequenz selten hört. Das macht richtig Bock und verleiht dem Song eine zusätzliche Dimension.

𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐆𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 wissen zweifelsohne, wie man Hits schreibt. Ihr Konzept ist klar definiert, ihre Stärken liegen in hymnischen Refrains, sofort zündenden Melodien und einer Songstruktur, die auf maximale Eingängigkeit ausgelegt ist. Das ist einerseits beeindruckend, weil die Band ein feines Gespür für Hooks besitzt. Andererseits birgt genau diese Klarheit auch eine gewisse Schattenseite: Die Songs folgen oft einem vorhersehbaren Muster. Man weiß ziemlich genau, wann der Refrain kommt, wann die Gitarren zum Solo ansetzen und wie der Spannungsbogen verläuft.

Das kann man positiv lesen, denn schließlich liefert die Band genau das, was ihre Fans erwarten. Und doch bleibt der Eindruck, dass 𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐆𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 sehr bewusst auf Radiotauglichkeit und breite Anschlussfähigkeit setzen. Die Energie ist da, keine Frage, aber sie wird kontrolliert kanalisiert, fast schon strategisch. Das macht die Stücke einerseits zugänglich und mitreißend, nimmt ihnen aber gelegentlich die Überraschungsmomente, die ein Album unberechenbarer und spannender machen würden.

Und so kommt es, wie es kommen musste: Eine Ballade darf natürlich nicht fehlen. „War in Heaven“ übernimmt diese Rolle — und wie zu erwarten, liefern TAILGUNNER auch hier erstklassig ab, wenn auch ohne große Überraschungen. Der Song klingt trotzdem wunderbar, getragen von einer warmen, emotionalen Atmosphäre. Vor allem Sänger Craig Carns läuft hier zu absoluter Hochform auf. Seine Performance trägt die gefühlvollen Ballade, die zwar nach Lehrbuch funktioniert, aber ihre Wirkung nicht verfehlt.

Was gibt’s noch? Neben der obligatorischen Ballade gönnen sich TAILGUNNER gleich zwei überlange Stücke: „Barren Lands and Seas of Red“ und den abschließenden Track „Eulogy“. In beiden Songs zeigt die Band, wie souverän sie ihre Instrumente beherrscht. Die Arrangements öffnen sich und die Instrumentalparts dürfen sich ausbreiten, ohne den Fluss zu verlieren. Hier kann man sich völlig an den ausufernden Instrumental-Passagen laben. Ein Fest für alle, die klassische Heavy‑Metal‑Epik schätzen und gerne in längeren Spannungsbögen versinken.

Fazit

𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐆𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 liefern mit 𝙈𝙞𝙙𝙣𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝘽𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙯 ein Album ab, das vor Selbstbewusstsein strotzt und mit seinen Hymnen sofort zündet, aber eben auch kaum Risiken eingeht. Die Band beherrscht ihr Handwerk, keine Frage, doch sie verbleibt auf vertrauten Pfaden und tun damit vermutlich genau das, was ihre Fans sich wünschen. Es ist ein Metal-Cocktail, der hier und da seine Farbe ändert, aber der Geschmack bleibt gleich. Aber hey … er schmeckt verdammt gut.

𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐆𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 setzen auf kalkulierte Schlagkraft: effektiv, eingängig, mitreißend. Wer große Refrains, strahlende Leads und sauber komponierten Traditions‑Metal sucht, wird hier bestens bedient. Wer nach Überraschungen oder Ecken und Kanten lechzt, wird kaum fündig werden. Jedoch treffen 𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐆𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 mit allen Songs ihr Ziel, nur eben mit der Präzision eines Laserstrahls statt mit der Wucht eines Vorschlaghammers.

TAILGUNNER have quickly become one of the scene’s favorite new shooting stars. Their refreshing, hook‑driven metal cocktail hits the sweet spot for a lot of fans, and it shows; despite forming only in 2022, they’ve already built up a surprisingly large following. Just a year later they dropped their debut 𝙂𝙪𝙣𝙨 𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙃𝙞𝙧𝙚, a pretty damn strong first strike packed with several real bangers. And to top it off, they’ve already landed at major label Napalm Records, which definitely won’t hurt their future prospects.

I recently reviewed the upcoming album “Violent Horror Stories” by Greek heavy metal outfit LEATHERHEAD (Review). Both bands play traditional heavy metal, but they take very different routes to get there. LEATHERHEAD unleash a storm of raw energy and untamed wildness, while TAILGUNNER put their focus on catchy, anthemic hooks. They’re just as energetic, no doubt — just a bit more controlled in how they fire it off.

An air‑raid siren kicks things off, and before you can even blink, the furious title track “Midnight Blitz” comes crashing in. The song’s got serious fire under its ass and shows right away how much more confident the band has become. Compared to the rather lukewarm opener “Shadows of War” from their debut, this feels like a whole different league.

Here, it’s straight to red alert: high tempo, tight power, and a lead guitar that goes on a full‑blown solo rampage. It’s pure fun, hits instantly, and grabs you without the slightest detour. A no‑nonsense opener that leaves nothing unanswered.

Right after that, TAILGUNNER show with “Tears in Rain” that they’re not just about power, but also about sheer grandeur. The chorus is one of those melodic strokes of genius that sticks instantly — epic and beautiful without drifting into cheese. The intensity drops a notch here, giving the bass more room to breathe and push the verses forward with a warm, steady drive.

What doesn’t change throughout the entire album are the fantastic guitar solos. Thanks to the twin‑guitar firepower of Rhea Thompson and Zach Salvini, the band treats these moments like a natural extension of their sound — confident, expressive, and delivered with a consistency you rarely hear these days. It’s pure joy and gives the track an extra layer of depth.

TAILGUNNER definitely know how to write hits. Their formula is crystal clear: big anthemic choruses, instantly catchy melodies, and song structures built for maximum impact. On the one hand, it’s impressive — the band has a killer instinct for hooks. On the other hand, that same clarity comes with a downside: the songs often follow a pretty predictable pattern. You can almost set your watch by when the chorus hits, when the guitars launch into a solo, and how the whole thing is going to unfold.

You can read that as a positive thing, because the band delivers exactly what their fans want. Still, it’s hard to shake the feeling that TAILGUNNER are aiming very deliberately for radio‑friendly territory and broad appeal. The energy is there, no doubt, but it’s channeled in a controlled, almost strategic way. That makes the songs catchy and instantly engaging, but it also takes away some of the surprises that would make the album feel wilder and more unpredictable.

And so, inevitably, the album brings out its mandatory ballad. “War in Heaven” takes on that role — and, as expected, TAILGUNNER deliver the goods, even if the track doesn’t throw any curveballs. It still sounds gorgeous, carried by a warm, emotional atmosphere. Singer Craig Carns really hits his peak here; his performance lifts the whole song and gives the ballad exactly the emotional weight it needs. It’s textbook stuff, sure — but it absolutely does the job.

What else is on the menu? Besides the obligatory ballad, TAILGUNNER treat themselves to two extended tracks: “Barren Lands and Seas of Red” and the closing piece “Eulogy.” Both songs show just how confidently the band handles their instruments. The arrangements open up, the riffs stretch out, and the instrumental sections get all the space they need without ever losing momentum. You can really sink your teeth into these sprawling passages — a feast for anyone who loves classic heavy‑metal epics and enjoys getting lost in long, slow‑burning tension arcs.

Conclusion

TAILGUNNER deliver an album with Midnight Blitz that’s bursting with confidence and fires off its anthems instantly — but it’s also one that rarely takes risks. The band clearly knows its craft, no doubt about that, yet they stick to familiar territory and probably give their fans exactly what they’re looking for. It’s a metal cocktail that changes color here and now, but the flavor stays the same. But hey…it tastes damn good.

TAILGUNNER rely on calculated firepower: effective, catchy, and undeniably gripping. If you’re after big choruses, blazing leads, and tightly crafted traditional metal, you’re in exactly the right place. Anyone looking for surprises or rough edges won’t find much to grab onto here. TAILGUNNER hit their target with every single track, just with the precision of a laser beam rather than the brute force of a sledgehammer.
