𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 sind seit den frühen 80’er Jahren aktiv und unter der Führung von Sänger Sammy DeJohn ihrem Metal-Stil treu geblieben. Und aktuell sind sie im Kader von Fireflash Records zu finden, die in den letzten Monaten etliche hochkarätige Bans in ihrem Hause aufgenommen haben. Es sind sehr junge vielversprechende Bands dabei, aber eben auch alte Haudegen wie 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 , die schon lange Bestandteil der Szene sind.

Von der legendären ersten EP „Metal Without Mercy“ (1984) und dem kultigen Debütalbum „Discipline Of Steel“ (1986) bis hin zu den späteren Alben „They Rise“ (2015)“ und „Evil Within“ (2019) sind sie ihren Wurzeln stets treu geblieben und stehen in der Tradition von Acts wie JUDAS PRIEST, ACCEPT und BLACK SABBATH. Ihr voriges Album „The Fallen“ erschien im Januar 2024, gefolgt von einer Europatournee als Support ihrer Metalbrüder JAG PANZER, wodurch sie ihren Ruf als großartige Live-Band festigten.

𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 sind übrigens bald auch live in Deutschland unterwegs. Die Daten findet ihr am Ende des Artikels. Dabei ist unter anderem ein Gig im Kulttempel Oberhausen am 26.Juli geplant, der allerdings auf der Kippe stand, weil die Vorverkäufe schlecht laufen. Verstehen tue ich das überhaupt nicht, denn THE TROOPS OF DOOM sind ebenfalls mit am Start und diese sind ebenfalls eine hammergeile Band. Die Bands sind so heiß auf den Gig, dass alle Beteiligten noch mal aufeinander zugegangen sind, um diese Veranstaltung durchzuziehen. Dies bedeutet im Ergebis immer finanzielle Abstriche, um das Risiko eines Verlustes für den Veranstalter zu reduzieren. Die Bands wollen also unbedingt spielen. Jetzt liegt es also nur noch an den Fans! Nun zu dem Album….

Review

𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 werden auf der Tour neben alten Klassikern wie „Metal Without Mercy“, „Gates Of Hell“ oder „Mass Killer“ sicherlich etwas von ihrem neuen Album 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙊𝙛 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 zum Besten geben. Darauf freue ich mich sehr, denn die Songs auf dem neuen Album sind ebenfalls echte Knaller.

Ich steige mal direkt mit dem Titeltrack „Curse Of The Beast“ ein, der sich mit dem beliebten und bekannten Thema der Werwolf-Legende beschäftigt. Wie verarbeitet man die Tatsache, dass man als „normaler“ Mensch nachts plötzlich zu mordenden Bestie wird?

„Curse Of The Beast“ verwandelt die Werwolf‑Legende in ein musikalisches Psychodrama. Der Track jagt nach vorn wie ein Wesen, das sich selbst nicht mehr halten kann: mit einem Puls aus rasenden Riffs, ein Herzschlag aus treibenden Drums. Die kreischenden Leadgitarren wirken wie der Moment des Zerreißens, in dem der Mensch verschwindet und die Bestie übernimmt. 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 setzen das Thema nicht als bloßes Horror‑Klischee um, sondern als brutale Metapher für Kontrollverlust und innere Dunkelheit.

Ganz 12 Knaller finden sich auf 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙊𝙛 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩, und die haben es in sich. Wer auf traditionellen Metal steht, der wird das Album komplett abfeiern. 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 steigen nach dem kurzen instrumentalen Intro „The Bood Moon“ mit „Curse Of The Beast“ 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 direkt mit einem Magenschlag in die Magengrube ein. Der Opener ist kein überfrachteter protziger Showmaker, sondern ein rauer aggressiver Appetizer, der sofort klarstellt, wohin die Reise geht. Der knackige, ungeschliffene Sound packt einen ohne Umschweife, während das Gitarrensolo wie ein Funkenflug durch den Song schneidet und den Puls nach oben treibt.

Anschließend fackelt man „Raging Violence“ einen weiteren metzelnden Burner ab. Hier entlädt sich pure, ungefilterte Energie. 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 machen vom ersten Takt an Alarm und halten das Tempo gnadenlos hoch. Die Riffs hacken, die Drums treiben, und Sammy DeJohn feuert seine Vocals mit einer Schärfe heraus, die dem Titel alle Ehre macht. Kein Zögern, kein Rückzug! Nur ein kompromissloser Metal‑Ansturm.wieder ein geiles ausgiebiges Gitarrensolo ab. Höchst unterhaltsam!

𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 denken zunächst nicht an Zurückhaltung und ballern mit „Berserker“ und „Suffocating Fear“ zwei weitere Energiebomben raus, die in ihrer Struktur straight sind. Doch mittig des Albums folgt mit „Blood Coalition“ eine Überraschung und ein echter Höhepunkt. „Blood Coalition“ schlägt in eine andere Kerbe als die bisherigen Songs und hat einen komplexeren Aufbau. Der melodische Einstieg bekräftigt einmal mehr das tolle Gitarrenspiel, welches sich durch das gesamte Album zieht. Hier werden alle Register gezogen. Zwischen scharfen Riffs mischen sich immer wieder starke Leads und geniale Solos. Im Mittelteil folgt ein Break mit einem fetten Bass-Feeling. Bei „Blood Coalition“ gefallen mir die dynamischen Wechsel, so dass das Gefühl der Eintönigkeit gar nicht erst aufkommt und eine gelungene Erweiterung im Konzept hervorbringt.

„Blood Coalition“ bleibt von seiner komplexeren Struktur aber eher die Ausnahme. 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 schaffen es jedoch regelmäßig, den Songs eine Dynamik oder bestimmte Akzente zu verpassen, um keine Langeweile aufkommen zu lassen. Sei es eine rhythmischer Wechsel, ein eingestreutes Solo oder gesangliche Variationen, natürlich alles im Zeichen des traditionellen Metal. Und dabei geht ihnen auch auf der zweiten Hälfte des Albums die Puste nicht aus. Mit „Hallowed Ground“ hauen 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 kurz vor dem Ende noch mal ne richtig geile mächtige Midtempo-Hymne raus.

Einzig der Song „Metal Gods“ als letzter Track hat mich nicht so richtig übezeugt und kommt im Finale etwas müde rüber. Solide, aber ohne dramaturgische Highlights.

Fazit

Mit 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙊𝙛 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 lassen es 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 so richtig krachen. Es ist ein enorm starkes, rohes und energiegeladenes Metal-Album, das vor allem durch sein kompromissloses Bekenntnis zum traditionellen Heavy Metal überzeugt. Die schnörkellosen Songs setzen auf klare, direkte Strukturen, bleiben aber dank rhythmischer Variationen und markanter Soli stets lebendig. 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙊𝙛 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 ist ein Freudenfest für Fans des Old-School-Metal.

Traditional metal is experiencing a real resurgence at the moment. One of the bands fully devoted to old‑school metal are undoubtedly 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒. Since the early 1980s, the group, led by vocalist Sammy DeJohn, has remained true to its signature style. Today, they are part of the Fireflash Records roster.

From the legendary first EP Metal Without Mercy (1984) and the cult debut album Discipline of Steel (1986) to later releases like They Rise (2015) and Evil Within (2019), the band has always stayed true to its roots, carrying the torch of acts such as JUDAS PRIEST, ACCEPT and BLACK SABBATH. Their previous album The Fallen was released in January 2024 via their new label Fireflash Records (home to WOLF, HOLY MOSES and others), followed by a European tour supporting their metal brothers JAG PANZER, a run that further cemented their reputation as a formidable live band.

𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 will soon be touring Germany as well. You’ll find all dates at the end of the article. One of the shows is scheduled for July 26 at the Kulttempel in Oberhausen – a gig that was actually on the brink of being cancelled due to weak presales. I honestly can’t understand why, because THE TROOPS OF DOOM are also on the bill, and they’re an absolutely killer band. The musicians are so fired up for this show that everyone involved came together once more to make it happen. In the end, that always means financial compromises to reduce the promoter’s risk of taking a loss. The bands really want to play. Now it’s up to the fans! And now back to the album…

Review

𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 will certainly perform some of their new material from 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙊𝙛 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 on tour, alongside classics like “Metal Without Mercy,” “Gates Of Hell,” or “Mass Killer.” I’m really looking forward to that, because the songs on the new album are absolute bangers as well.

Let’s dive right in with the title track “Curse Of The Beast“, which deals with the popular and well‑known theme of the werewolf legend. How does one cope with the fact that, as a “normal” human being, you suddenly turn into a murderous beast at night?

“Curse Of The Beast” transforms the werewolf myth into a musical psychodrama. The track charges forward like a creature that can no longer contain itself: a pulse of racing riffs, a heartbeat of driving drums. The screaming lead guitars feel like the very moment of tearing, when the human disappears and the beast takes over. 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 don’t treat the theme as a simple horror cliché, but as a brutal metaphor for loss of control and inner darkness.

Anyone into traditional metal will have a blast with this album. After the short instrumental intro “The Blood Moon“, 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 dive straight into the title track “Curse Of The Beast” with a punch to the gut. The opener isn’t an overblown, flashy showpiece, but a raw, aggressive appetizer that immediately makes clear where this journey is headed. The crisp, unpolished sound grabs you without hesitation, while the guitar solo cuts through the track like a burst of sparks and sends the pulse racing.

They follow it up with “Raging Violence“, another slicing, merciless burner. Here, pure, unfiltered energy erupts. 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 go full throttle from the very first second and keep the tempo relentlessly high. The riffs chop, the drums push forward, and Sammy DeJohn fires off his vocals with a sharpness that fully lives up to the song’s title. No hesitation, no retreat…just an uncompromising metal onslaught.

𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 show no intention of holding back and fire off two more energy‑packed grenades with “Berserker” and “Suffocating Fear“, both built on straight, no‑nonsense structures. But in the middle of the album comes a real surprise and clear highlight: “Blood Coalition“. The track strikes a different tone than the songs before it and features a more complex arrangement. Its melodic intro once again underlines the excellent guitar work that runs through the entire album. Here, the band pulls out all the stops. Sharp riffs collide with strong leads and brilliant solos. In the middle section, a break with a thick, rumbling bass feel opens up the song, before it launches into another extended guitar solo. The dynamic shifts keep the track from ever feeling monotonous and add a convincing expansion to the album’s concept.

“Blood Coalition” remains the exception in terms of structural complexity, but 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 consistently manage to inject enough dynamics and accents into their songs to keep things exciting. Whether through rhythmic changes, well‑placed solos, or vocal variations, always firmly rooted in traditional metal, the band ensures nothing ever feels stale. And even on the second half of the album, they don’t lose steam. With “Hallowed Ground“, 𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 unleash a mighty mid‑tempo anthem shortly before the end, delivering one more truly powerful highlight.

The only track that didn’t fully convince me is “Metal Gods”, which closes the album. It comes across a bit tired in the finale. Solid, but without any real dramatic highlights.

Conclusion

𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 really let it rip with 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙊𝙛 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩. It’s a very strong, raw and energetic metal album that convinces above all through its unwavering commitment to traditional heavy metal. The no‑frills songs rely on clear, direct structures, yet remain lively thanks to rhythmic variations and striking guitar solos. 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙊𝙛 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 is a great feast for fans of old‑school metal.
