Verzaubert hat mich Frontfrau Rowena schließlich mit ihrer emotionalen Darbietung bei „Where The River Meets The Sea“.

Where The River Meets The Sea„. Hier greift jedes Detail ineinander.

Since their formation in 2024 and the highly acclaimed debut EP Deeper Shades Of Torment, 𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐍𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 have been storming the British scene at a rapid pace. With their mix of angry riffs, captivating NWOBHM attitude, and the vocal prowess of frontwoman Rowena, the quintet leaves no doubt: on their new full-length album 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, 𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐍𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 unleash a stormy metal tornado in a thoroughly uncompromising way.

This has nothing to do with clumsy, dusty, dry retro nostalgia, but rather with explosive freshness and aggressiveness that catapults RATTLESNAKES into the category of exciting newcomers. After sold-out shows and the deal with Listenable Records, the band from Nottingham follows up and proves on Shadows In The Night that they are definitely a force to be reckoned with.

The lyrical content is very diverse and tackles a wide range of topics. Elliott Dryden, the band’s founder and bassist, explains:

Lyrically, the album explores a variety of topics, ranging from real world issues such as corruption, over-modernisation of day to day life and the human struggle with mental health. Other topics delve further into more supernatural, fantastical themes such as religion, demonic entities and extraterrestrial beings… we can’t wait to share this with the world and let our fans make their own interpretations of our lyrics!

The title track, sent ahead three months ago, is not just a wake-up call, but a detonation that simply cannot be ignored. Right from the very first listen, this song mercilessly blows you away with force-ten speed. When frontwoman Rowena Neale then kicks in with her incredible powerhouse vocals, the entire place is electrified instantly. She puts so much unbridled energy into her voice that she practically needs a weapons permit for it. „Shadows In The Night“ is a musical lightning strike that hits absolutely everyone without exception. Let yourselves be electrified!

And don’t think for a second that the title track is the only high-speed missile on the album. With „Destroyer“, „Lost Nor Found“, and „Breakdown“, there are three more songs of that speedy caliber. Of course, that doesn’t mean the remaining tracks are duds… quite the opposite! Even when the tempo slows down, the energy remains clearly palpable throughout. 𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐍𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 impressively prove here that they can just as easily pull resonant melodies and catchy hooks out of their sleeves.

As convincing proof, following „Shadows In The Night,“ they follow up with the song „Forever,“ which impressively highlights this highly melodic side of 𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐍𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒. It is still a biting track, but at the same time thrills with beautiful vocal lines. The guitar work is also convincing across the board: riffs, leads, and solos consistently mesh harmoniously and are just damn fun to listen to. Last but not least, it is a true joy how punchy and clear the bass comes across in the mix.

With the interlude „Dreamland“, which is noticeably influenced by 80s synths, the band openly shows their love for this era. These tones are an extremely successful preparation for „The Other Side Of Midnight“, which immediately sets off at a brisk gallop. As a listener, you are only too happy to sit in the saddle! The part from minute 02:35 is particularly strong: here, the 80s theme is developed even more clearly as singer Rowena consciously takes the power out of her voice and acts more emotionally. What is impressive is how the vocals and instrumentation then build up step by step again, only to finally break loose with full energy and maximum impact.

Frontwoman Rowena finally enchanted me with her emotional performance on „Where The River Meets The Sea“. It is the only song that starts out with very quiet tones, creating a wonderful atmosphere even featuring a violin. You feel completely captivated by this ballad, but then it happens: suddenly the track winds up and delivers a clean, hard right hook! No more cuddling – now things are getting wild! How fucking awesome is that?!

The song mutates into a powerful stomper of epic proportions. Later on, even folkloric flute sounds join in while the band shifts up another gear. What a funny, yet fitting Jethro Tull moment that expresses this love song to nature so well! A snappy, melodic guitar solo does the rest to make this piece an overwhelming experience. For me, an absolute mammoth highlight that, as a Grand Finale, would have fit perfectly at the end of the album!

Fazit

With 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, 𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐍𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 deliver a very thrilling debut. The Nottingham-based band relies by no means solely on breakneck speed metal and the weaponized vocal power of frontwoman Rowena Neale. 𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐍𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 demonstrate an outstanding sense of dynamics, the courage for surprising stylistic shifts, and a knack for crushing, epic moments: whether it’s 80s synth atmosphere, delicate passages, wild hooks, or the completely unexpected Jethro Tull touch in „Where The River Meets The Sea“. Every detail locks into place here. The guitars fire sharp salvos, the bass drives hard with plenty of push, and across the entire distance, the band showcases just how multifaceted and thrilling their take on heavy metal is.
