MARIANAS REST – neue Single „Diamonds In The Rough“

MARIANAS REST (Facebook) haben mich bisher mit ihren Alben „Fata Morgana“ (2021) und „Auer“ (2023) mehr als begeistert. In meinen Reviews für ‚metal-heads.de‘ habe ich Alben beide mit der Höchstpunktzahl bewertet.

Und nun geht die Reise weiter. Die finnische Doom-Death-Metal-Band setzt ihren Marsch in Richtung Veröffentlichung ihres kommenden fünften Studioalbums The Bereaved fort, das am 16. Januar 2026 über Noble Demon erscheinen soll. Nach der düster-emotionalen ersten Single „The Colour of You“ präsentiert die Band nun ihre zweite Single „Diamonds in the Rough“. Der Song enthält auch einen beeindruckenden Gastauftritt von Okko Solanterä (Horizon Ignited, Slaughterror), dessen kraftvoller Gesang den Track zu neuen Höhen führt.

Ich hatte schon immer ein Problem damit, wie wir uns an Verstorbene erinnern. Wir konzentrieren uns übermäßig auf die guten Seiten einer Person und spielen ihre Unvollkommenheiten herunter, ganz nach dem Motto „Sag nichts Schlechtes über die Toten“. Was könnte eine Person mehr ehren, als sie als Ganzes zu sehen und zu erinnern, mit all ihren Fehlern? Dieser Song feiert Erinnerungen, die sich an das halten, was wirklich passiert ist.

Auch wenn unsere Musik normalerweise eher darauf ausgerichtet ist, langsam Stimmungen aufzubauen und lange, nachhallende Songs zu spielen, ist es gelegentlich schön, sich ein wenig mehr zu wagen – hin zu rockigerem Material. Dieses Stück wurde schließlich zu einem dieser Experimente. Wir hatten mit unserem lieben Freund Okko (Solanterä) darüber gesprochen, einen Beitrag zu diesem Album zu machen, und als er dann seinen Gesangspart für den Refrain des Songs aufgenommen hatte, passte einfach alles zusammen. Wir freuen uns schon sehr darauf, diesen Song live zu spielen.

Tatsächlich geht der Song einen etwas anderen Weg, als man von MARIANAS REST gewohnt ist, aber die typischen Trademarks sind trotzdem vorhanden. „Diamonds In The Rough“ kommt dynamischer rüber und die Vocals von Gastsänger Okko fügen sich wunderbar in den Song ein und es passt auch hervorragend im Duett mit Jaakko. Was für ein kraftvolles und eindringliches Sängerduett! Haut mich um und berührt mein Herz! Und die melodischen Komponenten sind ebenfalls zauberhaft.

MARIANAS REST (Facebook) have more than thrilled me with their albums „Fata Morgana“ (2021) and „Auer“ (2023). In my reviews for ‚metal-heads.de‘, I gave both albums the highest possible rating at the time.

And now the journey continues. The Finnish doom death metal band continues its march toward the release of its upcoming fifth studio album, The Bereaved, scheduled for release on January 16, 2026, via Noble Demon. Following the dark and emotional first single, „The Color of You,“ the band now presents its second single, „Diamonds in the Rough.“ The song also features an impressive guest appearance by Okko Solanterä (Horizon Ignited, Slaughterror), whose powerful vocals take the track to new heights.

I have always had an issue with how we tend to remember those passed. You know, concentrating excessively on the good sides of a person and downplaying imperfections, the whole ‚don’t speak ill of the dead‘ thing. What could honor a person more than seeing and remembering him as a whole, flaws and all? This song celebrates memories that stick to what really happened.

Even though usually our music is more about slowly building atmospheres and long and lingering songs, on occasion it is nice to venture a bit more -to the point- rock’n roll type of stuff. This piece ended up being one of those experiments. We had had talks with our dear friend Okko (Solanterä) about doing a feature on this album, and once he ripped his vocal delivery on the chorus of the song, all just fell into place. Really looking forward to playing this one live.

In fact, the song takes a slightly different approach than what we are used to from MARIANAS REST, but the typical trademarks are still there. „Diamonds In The Rough“ comes across as more dynamic, and guest singer Okko’s vocals fit wonderfully into the song and also work excellently in duet with Jaakko. What a powerful and haunting vocal duet! It blows me away and touches my heart! And the melodic components are also enchanting.
