Dabei fängt alles ganz harmlos an.

Fazit

english review

The label Noble Demon, founded by Patrick Walch in 2019, features a roster of bands that now covers a broad musical spectrum. GOMORRA stand out as exciting representatives of Heavy Metal. After releasing Divine Judgement in 2020 and Dealer Of Souls in 2022, GOMORRA aim to take the next step with their new album Blood Of The Innocent.

The new material is even wilder, driven by an energy that kicks things up another notch. Yet, it all begins quite innocently; the intro „Human“ charms the listener with acoustic guitars, complemented by a lovely guitar solo. But then, that tranquil calm comes to an abrupt end as the track „Northman“ kicks in. It’s a truly powerful start that holds great promise. GOMORRA have pushed their sound even further, and I can sense a more untamed dynamic throughout the songs. Moreover, they have shown clear improvement in both their vocal delivery and guitar work. I wouldn’t have drawn a comparison to Judas Priest previously, but at times, this brings to mind the glorious era of the Painkiller album.

The following track „Rising Nation“ continues down this road, captivating with fantastic riffing while the high screams hit their mark. This song makes it equally obvious that the guitarists love to let loose with extensive solos.

To give you an idea of what I’m writing about, let’s look at the lead single „Supreme Hate“. Here it quickly becomes clear what I mean: GOMORRA display a sheer joy of playing that bursts with energy. Technically speaking, what GOMORRA deliver here is in a whole different league compared to their previous output. The vocals pack a serious punch as well, driving the sound in a more versatile way than before—high screams included. It’s great, though, that these aren’t present constantly; instead, the vocals also blast out of the speakers dark and powerful.

So the first four tracks completely knocked my socks off, leaving me ready for the next energy-charged highlights. But then I get slammed on the brakes by the ballad „Eternal Ice“. Unfortunately, „Eternal Ice“ doesn’t quite do it for me and essentially pulls the plug on the power outlet. While the atmosphere is right, far too little happens overall, and except for the nice guitar solo, the song mostly plods along monotonically. At times, the tension builds up and you expect some kind of escalation, but the only breaking point remains the strong guitar solo. They easily could have cut a minute off this track.

Fortunately, the subsequent title track „Blood Of The Innocent“ gets my pulse racing again before I fall into an ‚Eternal Sleep‘. „Blood Of The Innocent“ brings me right back onto the battlefield, and I’m fully locked in. „Friend Of War“ takes the pace down a notch, but stomps forward with strong power. The chorus erupts with higher energy, and I appreciate moments like that which give a song more dynamic range. However, this concept ends up being drawn out too long for my taste. The final third of the song in particular feels unnecessary to me. I would have loved one last proper explosive climax after the lively solo.

I see the band’s core strengths on this album clearly in its driving, energetic moments that keep dragging me along, such as „Cycle Of Decay“. While that track also has its moderated melodic passages, it periodically blows the horn for a rapid attack, which they easily could have built upon even more. Instead, they take the wind out of its sails for two full minutes in the middle, remaining at mid-tempo only to stomp on the gas pedal one last brief time right near the end.

That leaves the finale „Endless Sacrifice“ which suffers the same fate as „Eternal Ice“ in my book. It sounds pleasant enough and is decent to listen to, but once again, very little happens outside of the guitar solo. For an album that otherwise thrills with magnificent, captivating action moments, this strikes me as an unfortunate conclusion. A full-blown metal fireworks show would have made much more sense to close out the record with a real bang—especially considering the album’s total running time is only 37 minutes. Had they ignited two more metal fireworks on the tracklist, I would have appreciated songs like these far more within the overall concept.

It should be noted that the most recent albums had significantly longer runtimes and completely eschewed such quiet ballads. While „Lost In Darkness“, from the album Dealer Of Souls, is also a ballad, it is considerably more powerful than the two very quiet ballads „Eternal Ice“ and „Endless Sacrifice“.

Conclusion

With Blood Of The Innocent, GOMORRA deliver a powerful statement, significantly upping the ante in terms of both technicality and dynamics. The record crackles with energy, especially during its fast, unbridled moments, boasts superb guitar work, and, not least through its vocal delivery, evokes the glorious era of Painkiller. Unfortunately, the album loses some energy past the halfway mark, largely due to two ballads that carry considerable weight given the relatively modest total runtime. Those who aren’t bothered by this can feel free to add a point to the final score.
