Wow.

Oktober via Nuclear Blast erscheinen.

As veterans of the extreme metal scene, 𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐃 have never allowed boundaries to define their sound. Instead, they have always sought to push beyond them. Emerging from the raw foundations of early Norwegian black metal, the band has spent decades developing an increasingly complex and multifaceted musical language.

𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐃 have never shied away from experimentation. While they have always drawn strength from their roots, their music has undergone constant transformation. As a result, their extensive discography has taken many different directions over the decades, and admittedly, some of those musical excursions did not resonate with me at all. It seems safe to assume that artistic freedom will once again play a crucial role on their new album Mið. Overall, ENSLAVED’s music has become more reconciliatory and mature over the years, bearing little resemblance to the purely brutal and infernal force of their earlier days.

And that is precisely what makes every new 𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐃 release so intriguing: you never quite know what to expect. Yet their artistic vision has earned them considerable recognition along the way, including multiple wins at Norway’s prestigious Spellemannprisen, the country’s foremost music award. Now, the Norwegians are opening another chapter in their remarkable career and have already unveiled several singles. So, what better time to dive in and discover what they have come up with this time?

With the very first single, „Spirit Helper“, 𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐃make it clear that their artistic vision reaches far beyond music alone. Created in collaboration with Kevin Kicking Woman of the Blackfeet/Cree Nation in Montana, the song is permeated by a profound sense of spirituality and built around ideas of connection, responsibility and mutual respect. What makes the track particularly remarkable is not only the story behind its creation, but also its underlying message: the realization that humanity, nature and the spiritual world are inextricably connected. In an increasingly fragmented society, these thoughts feel both timeless and more relevant than ever.

Ivar Bjørnson of 𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐃 and Kevin Kicking Woman explain the concept behind „Spirit Helper“ and the long journey that ultimately led to its creation below.

Kevin Kicking Woman (Gesang) explains:
Songs are the Blackfoot way of knowing. Expressing relationship and responsibility, belonging and accountability. The purpose of this song is having the performative expression giving meaning to life. Connecting to the universes through the cosmos, earth beings, water beings and spirit beings. Spirit helper is the physical documentation in this process.

Ivar Bjørnson (Enslaved) schildert die gesamte Entstehungsgeschichte von „Spirit Helper“:
‚Spirit Helper‘ began taking shape long before the song itself existed. Its origins lie in years of conversations, festivals, travel, and shared experiences that gradually connected people, traditions, landscapes, and communities.

For Enslaved, the path toward this collaboration began in Colorado in 2019. Through our extended musical family – including shared connections with Wardruna, our longtime management, and the wider community surrounding Fire in the Mountains – we were introduced to one of the festival organisers; Shane McCarthy and the vision behind the gathering that would eventually lead us toward the Blackfeet Nation in Montana. What initially began as conversations around performances and artistic collaboration slowly evolved into something much deeper: an exchange of perspectives, histories, and spiritual traditions shaped by many people along the way.

Those connections continued to grow over the following years through both Fire in the Mountains and the wider community surrounding By Norse Music – the label and artistic platform founded by members of Enslaved and Wardruna together with our manager Simon Füllemann. Through By Norse, new conversations, meetings, and cultural exchanges emerged, eventually helping create the conditions that made ‚Spirit Helper‘ possible.

For us, the song represents far more than a collaboration between artists from different backgrounds. It reflects what can happen when people meet openly, listen carefully, and allow themselves to be changed by the encounter. The generosity, trust, and wisdom shared with us by Kevin Kicking Woman, Nick Rink, the Blackfeet community, Fire in the Mountains, the Firekeeper Alliance, our partners through By Norse, and everyone who helped shape this journey are things we carry with deep gratitude.

While “Spirit Helper” thrives on its profound spiritual dimension, “Solar Will” reveals the full force of 𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐃 as a progressive metal powerhouse. The song surges ahead with untamed energy and monumental heaviness, yet repeatedly gives way to expansive melodies and moments of majestic grandeur. It is precisely this interplay between sheer force and melodic scope that turns “Solar Will” into such a compelling experience, one that continues to resonate long after the final note has faded.

And now we come to the latest single, “Tales Of Trees”… Wow. From its very first moments, the song makes an imposing statement. Dark, heavy and charged with an almost elemental force, it rises from the depths like a musical earthquake. But beneath all that overwhelming power, 𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐃 once again allow gentler melodies to surface, creating a compelling contrast between strength and vulnerability, growth and transience. Heaviness and grandeur become intertwined until the composition begins to resemble an intricately hand-woven tapestry, each musical thread contributing to patterns that seem to tell ancient stories of becoming and fading, of life and death.

Below, Grutle Kjellson sheds some light on the deeper symbolism behind the trees and explains why they represent something far greater than themselves:

„Tales of Trees“ is indeed tales about trees, but perhaps not first and foremost in a botanical sense. Trees can grow, shine, and flourish, but they can also wither and burn. They need to be tended to and looked after in one way or another, and thus serve as a fitting parallel to the human mind, let alone humanity as a whole. Trees as symbols of something more than mere botanical creatures have appeared throughout history, both in mythological tales and in folklore. So, I think this tale is a fitting accompaniment the the heavy and yet dynamic tunes of this composition”

After these three impressive singles, one thing becomes abundantly clear: 𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐃 are creating something that transcends music itself. Beneath their monumental soundscapes and intricate compositions lies a world of symbolism and meaning waiting to be discovered. Drawing on decades of experience and constantly evolving musicianship, the Norwegians transform their songs into experiences that appeal not only to the senses, but also to the mind. This is music that does not simply ask to be heard. It asks to be experienced, contemplated and ultimately understood.

The new album Mið will be released on October 30, 2026, via Nuclear Blast Records.
