𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 haben den symphonischen Black Metal nicht nur salonfähig gemacht, sondern ihn als eigenständige Kunstform etabliert. Mit ihrem Album „Enthrone Darkness Triumphant“ (1997) vollzogen sie einen scharfen Schnitt zum klassischen rohen Black Metal. Was in den 90ern noch als Verrat am „wahren“ Black Metal galt, erwies sich als radikale Erweiterung des Genres: orchestrale Wucht, cineastische Dramaturgie und eine kompromisslose Vision, die weit über die engen Grenzen des Undergrounds hinausreichte.
Trotz Anfeindungen blieben sie ihrer Linie treu und schufen sich eine riesige Fanbase.

2018 erschien das Album „Eonian“ und dies war besonders in Deutschland sehr erfolgreich. In den offiziellen Albumcharts im Mai 2018 erreichte das Album sogar Platz 4 und konnte sich insgesamt vier Wochen in den Charts halten. Kommerziell war es sicherlich ein Erfolg, wobei das Album recht unterschiedlich bei Kritikern bewertet und auch bei den Fans wie üblich heiß diskutiert wurde.

Nach 8 Jahren kommen 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 am 22. Mai mit ihrem neuen Album 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 zurück und bringen gleich die neue Single „Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel“ mit. Hier ist sie:

Shagrath sagt zu dem kommenden Album 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 folgendes:

Ich bin überzeugt, dass wir uns mit diesem Album musikalisch selbst übertroffen haben. Es war ein langer und anspruchsvoller Prozess, aber zu sehen, wie alles zusammengekommen ist, macht die Mühe unglaublich lohnend. 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 spiegelt jede Ära von Dimmu Borgir wider – dieses Album trägt Echos aus jedem Kapitel der Dimmu-Borgir-Geschichte in sich – ich glaube, unsere Fans werden das erkennen und etwas darin finden, das sie tief berührt.

Das macht mich sehr neugierig, denn bei diesen Worten darf man natürlich gespannt sein, ob wirklich jede Ära in der musikalischen Historie Einzug in das Album gefunden hat. Denn dann müsste man den Anfängen der Band auch huldigen und es müssten klassische old school Black-Metal Vibes mit eingebunden worden sein. Zumindest die erste Single „Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel“ zeigt das noch nicht, aber die Reise auf dem Album wird über 13 Songs gehen. Mal sehen, was 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 da noch im Angebot haben.

Gitarrist Silenoz hat mit dem Album auch eine spirituelle Verbindung:

„Es passt perfekt. Dimmu Borgir sind eine gigantische Band, und wir sind wieder im Aufstieg begriffen. Während die Schlange für manche das Böse verkörpert, symbolisiert sie für uns etwas anderes: Erneuerung, Wachstum, Erkenntnis und Befreiung. Wir häuten uns sozusagen. Und nicht zu vergessen: Im Februar 2026 endet das Jahr der Schlange – ungefähr zur selben Zeit, als dieses Album fertiggestellt wurde.

English review

𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 not only made symphonic black metal socially acceptable, they established it as an independent art form. With their 1997 album Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, they executed a sharp break from the traditional raw black metal sound. What was considered a betrayal of “true” black metal in the 1990s ultimately proved to be a radical expansion of the genre: orchestral force, cinematic dramaturgy, and an uncompromising vision that reached far beyond the narrow confines of the underground.
Despite the hostility they faced, they remained true to their path and built a massive fanbase.

The album „Eonian“ was released in 2018 and was particularly successful in Germany. In the official album charts in May 2018, it even reached number 4 and remained in the charts for a total of four weeks. Commercially, it was certainly a success, although the album received quite mixed reviews from critics and, as usual, was hotly debated among fans.

After 8 years, 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 return on May 22nd with their new album 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 and bring along the new single „Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel“. Here it is:

Shagrath says the following about the upcoming album 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆:

I truly feel we’ve outdone ourselves musically on this album. It’s been a long and demanding process, but seeing how it all came together makes it incredibly rewarding. Grand Serpent Rising reflects every era of Dimmu Borgir — This album carries echoes of every chapter of Dimmu Borgir’s legacy — I believe our fans will recognize that, and find something within it that truly resonates.

This makes me very curious, because with words like these, one can’t help but wonder if every era in musical history has truly found its way into the album. If so, then the band’s beginnings would also have to be honored, and classic old-school black metal vibes would have to be incorporated. At least the first single, „Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel,“ doesn’t yet show this, but the album will span 13 tracks. Let’s see what else 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 have in store.

It fits perfectly! Dimmu Borgir is a leviathan of a band on a grand scale and we are rising once again. While the serpent represents evil to some, for us it symbolizes something else: renewal, growth, knowledge, and liberation. Shedding our skin, so to speak. And let’s not forget that February 2026 marks the end of the Year of the Snake, roughly the same moment this album was completed.
