𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 haben den symphonischen Black Metal nicht nur salonfähig gemacht, sondern ihn als eigenständige Kunstform etabliert. Was in den 90ern noch als Verrat am „wahren“ Black Metal galt, erwies sich als radikale Erweiterung des Genres: orchestrale Wucht, cineastische Dramaturgie und eine kompromisslose Vision, die weit über die engen Grenzen des Undergrounds hinausreichte.
Trotz Anfeindungen blieben sie ihrer Linie treu und schufen sich eine riesige Fanbase.

2018 erschien das Album „Eonian“ und dies war besonders in Deutschland sehr erfolgreich. In den offiziellen Albumcharts im Mai 2018 erreichte das Album sogar Platz 4 und konnte sich insgesamt vier Wochen in den Charts halten. Kommerziell war es sicherlich ein Erfolg, wobei das Album recht unterschiedlich bei Kritikern bewertet und auch bei den Fans wie üblich heiß diskutiert wurde.

Ich persönlich finde den Sound nach wie vor beeindruckend, doch gerade auf Eonian hat das Material für mich nur noch in Ansätzen etwas mit Black Metal zu tun. Die dichte Produktion, die orchestrale Dominanz und die glatten Arrangements rücken das Album eher in Richtung Dark Symphonic Metal als in die klassischen Wurzeln der Band.

Ich bin also gespannt, was 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 nach langen 8 Jahren mit ihrem neuen Album 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙎𝙀𝙍𝙋𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙄𝙉𝙂 gezaubert haben.

Im Vorfeld gab die Band folgende spannende Äußerung von sich:

Ich bin überzeugt, dass wir uns mit diesem Album musikalisch selbst übertroffen haben. Es war ein langer und anspruchsvoller Prozess, aber zu sehen, wie alles zusammengekommen ist, macht die Mühe unglaublich lohnend. 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 spiegelt jede Ära von Dimmu Borgir wider – dieses Album trägt Echos aus jedem Kapitel der Dimmu-Borgir-Geschichte in sich – ich glaube, unsere Fans werden das erkennen und etwas darin finden, das sie tief berührt.

GRAND SERPENT RISING

Vorweg kann man sagen, dass 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙎𝙀𝙍𝙋𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙄𝙉𝙂 allein von seiner Spielzeit epische Dimensionen erreicht. Ganze 72 Minuten Spielzeit ist eine echte Ansage. So eine opulente Darbietung will gut befüllt sein, um sie nicht zu einer Überforderung für den Hörer werden zu lassen.

„Tridentium“ eröffnet das Album mit düsteren Streichern und einer vertrauten schaurigen DIMMU‑Atmosphäre, verliert sich jedoch meiner Meinung nach in seiner vierminütigen Länge. Die erste Häfte hätte völlig ausgereicht, um die Stimmung in die richtige Richtung zu dramatisieren, doch der zweite Teil mit der Erzählstimme zieht es unnötig in die Länge, wodurch die eigentlich schöne Wirkung zu Beginn verloren geht.

Dasselbe gilt für das finale „Gjǫll“: Auch dieses Outro trägt letztlich wenig zum Gesamtbild bei. Die düsteren Klangflächen sind atmosphärisch solide, doch das Stück entwickelt sich kaum und hat für mich keinen Mehrwert für das Album.

„Ascent“ bricht die leicht einschläfernde Stimmung des Intros mit einem Schlag auf und entfesselt eine furiose Darbietung sondergleichen. Die Blastbeats prasseln unnachgiebig herab, während Shagraths Vocals herrlich böse und finster durch den Mix schneiden. Erwartungsgemäß nehmen 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 zwischendurch etwas Tempo heraus, um ihre pompösen Arrangements in voller Größe auszubreiten. Der Wechsel zwischen diesen monumentalen Passagen und den wirbelsturmartigen Attacken gelingt hervorragend. Alles wirkt überwältigend und packend.

𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 zelebrieren ihre neuen Songs in ausufernder Manier und bauen sie zu regelrechten Ungetümen auf. Manchmal kommen sie meinem Empfinden nach jedoch nicht genug auf den Punkt und verlieren sich stellenweise in ihren eigenen Strukturen. „As Seen in the Unseen“ etwa beginnt erneut mit einem langen Intro, bevor der Sturm losbricht – ein Aufbau, der in dieser Form eigentlich gar nicht nötig wäre. Ein ähnliches Bild, nur andersherum, zeigt „Recognizant“: Die erste Hälfte ist wirklich großartig, voller Energie und klarer Dramaturgie, doch in der zweiten Hälfte verliert der Song seinen Faden und damit auch einen Teil seiner Wucht.

Gleichzeitig ist es großartig zu hören, dass 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 insgesamt wieder deutlich mehr von ihrer wilden Energie entfachen. Der harsche, rohe Kern des Black Metal, wie man ihn von anderen Vertretern des Genres kennt, tritt in dieser cineastischen Produktion zwar weniger dominant hervor, doch die entfesselte Dynamik ist unüberhörbar.

Das beweisen auch Songs wie „Slik Minnes en Alkymist“, der schlichtweg genial geraten ist. Ein unglaublich melodischer Akt, der mit seinem progressiven Aufbau voll überzeugt und zahlreiche Facetten zu einem epischen Gesamtkunstwerk verwebt. Für mich einer von diversen Höhepunkten des Albums. In die gleiche Kategorie fällt „The Exonerated“, bei dem die symphonischen Elemente einmal nicht im Vordergrund stehen und stattdessen göttliche Gitarrensoli für Begeisterung sorgen. Ein Traum! Ähnlich verhält es sich mit „At the Precipice of Convergence“, das mit einem fantastischen Songaufbau glänzt und in einer enorm starken dramaturgischen Klimax mündet, die von einem ausdrucksstarken, fetzigen Gitarrensolo gekrönt wird.

„Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel“ ist dann eher wieder ein Beispiel, wo 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 auf atmosphärische Elemente setzen, die cineastische Ausmaße annehmen. Es dauert, bis der Song langsam Konturen annimmt und Fahrt aufnimmt.

Fazit

Mit 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙎𝙀𝙍𝙋𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙄𝙉𝙂 präsentieren 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 ein Album, das zwischen orchestraler Opulenz und entfesselter Härte pendelt. Die Band zelebriert ihre Songs oft in ausufernder Länge und verliert sich dabei gelegentlich in überdehnten Strukturen, die nicht immer auf den Punkt kommen. Gleichzeitig entfachen 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 jedoch spürbar viel mehr von ihrer wilden Energie als auf dem Vorgänger und erinnern in vielen Momenten daran, wozu sie als extreme Metal‑Größe fähig sind.

Am Ende steht mit 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙎𝙀𝙍𝙋𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙄𝙉𝙂 ein Album, das nicht jede seiner monumentalen Ambitionen perfekt ausbalanciert, aber dennoch zahlreiche Höhepunkte bietet und 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 hörbar vitaler, energiegeladener und kreativer zeigt als auf dem letzten Album. Ein Werk voller Größe (mit gelegentlichen Überlängen) und vieler Momente, die schlicht begeistern und überwältigend sind.

𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 not only made symphonic black metal socially acceptable, they established it as an art form in its own right. What was still considered a betrayal of “true” black metal in the ’90s ultimately proved to be a radical expansion of the genre: orchestral force, cinematic dramaturgy, and an uncompromising vision that reached far beyond the narrow confines of the underground. Despite all hostility, they remained true to their path and built a massive fanbase.

Released in 2018, Eonian proved to be particularly successful in Germany. In the official German album charts of May 2018, the record even reached number 4 and remained in the charts for a total of four weeks. Commercially, it was certainly a success, although the album received quite mixed reviews from critics and, as usual, sparked heated debate among fans.

I still find the sound on Eonian impressive, yet the material on this album has only faint traces of black metal left for me. The dense production, the dominant orchestration, and the smooth arrangements push the record much more toward dark symphonic metal than toward the band’s classic roots.

So I’m genuinely curious to see what 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 have conjured up after eight long years with their new album 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙎𝙀𝙍𝙋𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙄𝙉𝙂.

Ahead of the release, the band made the following intriguing statement:

I truly feel we’ve outdone ourselves musically on this album. It’s been a long and demanding process, but seeing how it all came together makes it incredibly rewarding. Grand Serpent Rising reflects every era of Dimmu Borgir — This album carries echoes of every chapter of Dimmu Borgir’s legacy — I believe our fans will recognize that, and find something within it that truly resonates.

GRAND SERPENT RISING

Right from the outset, it’s clear that 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙎𝙀𝙍𝙋𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙄𝙉𝙂 reaches epic proportions simply through its running time alone. A full 72 minutes is quite a statement. Such an opulent presentation needs to be filled with substance to avoid overwhelming the listener.

“Tridentium” opens the album with dark strings and that familiar eerie 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 atmosphere, yet in my opinion it loses itself in its four‑minute length. The first half would have been entirely sufficient to set the mood and build the right dramatic tension, but the second part with the narrative voice stretches things unnecessarily, causing the initially strong effect to fade.

The same applies to the final track “Gjǫll”: this outro ultimately adds little to the overall picture. The dark soundscapes are atmospherically solid, but the piece barely develops and, for me, offers no real added value to the album.

“Ascent” shatters the slightly soporific mood of the intro in an instant and unleashes a furious performance unlike anything else. The blast beats rain down relentlessly while Shagrath’s vocals cut through the mix with a wonderfully vicious, sinister edge. As expected, 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 briefly pull back the tempo to let their pompous arrangements unfold in full grandeur. The interplay between these monumental passages and the whirlwind‑like assaults works brilliantly. Everything feels overwhelming and gripping.

𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 revel in their new songs with an expansive approach, building them into towering behemoths. At times, however, they don’t quite get to the point and lose themselves in their own structures. “As Seen in the Unseen“, for instance, once again begins with a long intro before the storm finally breaks — a buildup that, in this form, really wouldn’t have been necessary. “Recognizant” presents a similar picture, only in reverse: the first half is truly excellent, full of energy and clear dramaturgy, but in the second half the song loses its thread and, with it, part of its impact.

At the same time, it’s great to hear that 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 are once again unleashing far more of their wild energy overall. The harsh, raw core of black metal — as known from other representatives of the genre — is less dominant in this cinematic production, yet the unleashed dynamism is unmistakable.

Songs like “Slik Minnes en Alkymist” prove this as well — a track that turned out simply brilliant. Incredibly melodic, fully convincing in its progressive build, and weaving countless facets into an epic work of art. For me, it’s one of several highlights on the album. “The Exonerated” falls into the same category, with the symphonic elements taking a back seat for once while divine guitar solos steal the spotlight. A dream. The same applies to “At the Precipice of Convergence“, which shines with a fantastic song structure and culminates in a tremendously strong dramatic climax, crowned by an expressive, fiery guitar solo.

“Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel” is another example of DIMMU BORGIR leaning heavily into atmospheric elements that take on cinematic proportions. It takes a while for the song to slowly take shape and gather momentum.

Conclusion

With 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙎𝙀𝙍𝙋𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙄𝙉𝙂, 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 present an album that oscillates between orchestral opulence and unleashed ferocity. The band often celebrates their songs in sprawling lengths, occasionally losing themselves in overstretched structures that don’t always hit the mark. At the same time, however, 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 ignite noticeably more of their wild energy than on the previous record, reminding us in many moments of the sheer force they are capable of as a major extreme‑metal act.

In the end, 𝙂𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝙎𝙀𝙍𝙋𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙄𝙉𝙂 stands as an album that doesn’t perfectly balance each of its monumental ambitions, yet still offers numerous highlights and presents 𝐃𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔 𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐑 as audibly more vital, energetic, and creative than on the last album. A work full of grandeur (with the occasional overlong moment) and many passages that are simply thrilling and overwhelming.
