CARBELLION sind mir zum ersten Mal mit ihrem Album Weapons Of Choice im Jahr 2023 aufgefallen und haben mich vom Fleck weg begeistert, und dies nicht nur mit diesem Album. Denn CARBELLION gibt es schon seit 2004 und deswegen kam ich auch in den Genuß älterer Alben, die allesamt echt gut sind. Was sofort bei den Covern auffällt, ist die Tatsache, dass die Jungs Motorsport-Fans sind. Starke Autos und fette Motorräder sind ihr Ding.

Die Jungs stehen also auf Power! Und das spiegelt sich auch in ihrer Musik wieder. CARBELLION stehen für bodenständigen authentischen Rock n Roll, der schmutzig und hart einschlägt. Ich habe CARBELLION damals 2023 in dem Album-Review zu Weapons Of Choice für ‚metal-heads.de‘ so beschrieben:

Ihre Waffen der Wahl sind kreischende Gitarrenleads, brettharte Riffs, ein wuchtiger groovender Bass, lebendige Drums und ein dreckige Rockröhre am Mikro. Alle Waffen zusammen ergeben einen energiegeladenen musikalischen Angriff, der alle Kolben zum Glühen bringt und die Maschine unter Feuer setzt.

Nun…. daran hat sich rein gar nicht geändert. Zum Glück! Die Wartezeit war lang, aber dafür haben sie ganz aktuell mit der Single „I Don’t Want To Be Your Dog“ einen Killer-Track rausgeknallt. Das Ding röhrt und scheppert, geht ab wie ein Hot Rod! Die Single ist ein feuriger Rocksong, der alles in Brand setzt. Das Ding ist ne echte Adrenalinspritze und bringt den Puls auf Hochtouren. Die Vocals dulden auch keinen Widerspruch und schütten zusätzliches Benzin ins Feuer. Volle Punktzahl für diesen Banger!

Ich schrieb weiter oben von einer bodenständigen Rockband mit einem starken Zusammenhalt. Dafür spricht auch ein stabiles Line Up über all die Jahre. Cameron und Brandon sind Gründungsmitglieder. Steve Sheppard stieß als letzter Neueinsteiger dazu. Seitdem hat sich nichts geändert.

Diese Eigenschaft der Freundschaft, des Zusammenhalts und der Bodenständigkeit wird mit der Single noch einmal betont. Das Video wurde in einer Haller der Wohltätigkeitsorganisation Dogs 2 Dog Tags gedreht. Sänger Carmon Kellenberger setzt sich mit den oft mit dem Rock-Lifestyle verbundenen Leistungserwartungen auseinander und beleuchtet den Moment, in dem ein Künstler sich für Selbstschutz statt billiger, rücksichtsloser Unterhaltung entscheidet.

Carmon erläutert, worum es bei der Organisation und dem Song geht:

Wir fanden, dass die Wahl dieses Songs als erste Single eine großartige Möglichkeit war, das neue Album mit unserem Up-Tempo-Rock’n’Roll-Stil und unserer energiegeladenen Darbietung vorzustellen. Uns hat das Trainingszentrum von Dogs 2 Dog Tags schon immer gefallen: Es ist ein großer Raum mit einer riesigen amerikanischen Flagge, in dem gerettete Hunde und Spendenhunde ausgebildet werden, um sie anschließend an Veteranen mit PTBS und Angststörungen zu vermitteln.

Da wir unseren selbst definierten Stil als ‚American Heavy Rock‘ bezeichnen, fühlte es sich einfach richtig an, direkt vor einer riesigen amerikanischen Flagge zu stehen. Zudem ist die Aufnahme von mir in einem manischen Zustand in einem Hundekäfig eine visuelle Anspielung auf Themen, die schon lange zur Identität der Band gehören, und schlägt gleichzeitig eine metaphorische Brücke zum Song selbst. Im Kern geht es in dem Text darum, das Bedürfnis hinter sich zu lassen, durch rücksichtsloses, selbstzerstörerisches Verhalten im Mittelpunkt zu stehen und andere zu unterhalten.

Diese gewaltige Sammlung aus elf Titeln schlägt ein mutiges neues Kapitel für die Band auf und präsentiert ihre charakteristische Mischung aus Desert Rock, Stoner Sludge und traditionellem Heavy Rock. 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙘𝙮𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣!

I first took notice of CARBELLION with their 2023 album Weapons Of Choice and was instantly won over, and not just by that album alone. CARBELLION has actually been around since 2004, so I also had the pleasure of listening to their earlier albums, all of which are really good. What immediately stands out about the cover art—and the band name, of course—is the fact that the guys are motorsport fans. High-performance cars and big motorcycles are their thing.

So, the guys are all about power! And that is reflected in their music. CARBELLION stand for down-to-earth, authentic rock ’n‘ roll that hits hard and gritty. Back in 2023, I described CARBELLION this way in my review of the album Weapons of Choice for ‚metal-heads.de‘:

Their weapons of choice are screaming guitar leads, hard riffs, a massive grooving bass, lively drums and a dirty rock tube on the mic. All weapons together result in an energetic musical attack that makes all pistons glow and sets the powerful machine under fire.

Well… absolutely nothing has changed there. Thank goodness! The wait was long, but they’ve just unleashed a killer track with the single „I Don’t Want To Be Your Dog“. It roars and rattles. It takes off like a hot rod! „I Don’t Want To Be Your Dog“ is a fiery rock song that sets everything ablaze. It’s a real shot of adrenaline that gets your pulse racing. The energetic vocals pour even more fuel on the fire. Full points for this banger!

I mentioned earlier that this is a down-to-earth rock band with a strong sense of unity. The stable lineup maintained over the years bears this out. Cameron and Brandon are founding members; Steve Sheppard was the last change, coming on board in 2015. Nothing has changed since then.

This quality of friendship, solidarity, and groundedness is further emphasized by the single. The video was filmed at a facility belonging to the charity Dogs 2 Dog Tags. Carmon Kellenberger addresses the performance expectations often associated with the rock lifestyle and sheds light on the moment an artist chooses self-preservation over cheap, reckless entertainment.

Carmon explains what the organization and the song are about:

We felt that choosing this song as the first single was a great way to introduce the new album to everyone with our up-tempo rock n’ roll style and high energy delivery. We’ve always liked the training facility at Dogs 2 Dog Tags as it’s a big room with a giant American flag displayed where they train rescued and donated dogs, giving them to veterans diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety.

As most know, we herald our self-defined style as American Heavy Rock so it just felt right to be standing directly in front of a giant American flag. Also, filming myself in a manic state inside a dog cage serves as a visual nod to several themes that have long been part of the band’s identity, while also tying metaphorically to the song itself. At a high level, the lyrics explore the idea of outgrowing the need to be the center of attention and entertainment for others through reckless, self-destructive behavior.
