MEZZROW (Facebook) kommen aus Schweden und sind schon seit einiger Zeit Gäste in meiner Playlist. Die Band besinnt sich bei ihrer Interpretation des Thrash-Metal auf den traditionellen Sound der Bay Area, aber so ganz gehen die modernen Zeiten auch an ihnen nicht vorbei. Grundsätzlich klingen so düster aggressiv, garnieren ihren Sound darüber hinaus mit einigen melodischen Akzenten und hier und da mit ansprechenden Überraschungen. Der Gesang hat ordentlich Power und kraftvolle Chöre sind auch mit von der Partie. Also steigen wir mal ein in das neue Album Embrace The Awakening.

Die düstere Ausstrahlung des Albums wird bereits mit den ersten Tönen spürbar. Der Opener beginnt mit einer längeren, spannungsgeladenen Einleitung, bevor er in einen hochdynamischen, speedigen Part übergeht. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die Gitarrenarbeit: knackige Riffs treffen auf angenehm variable Spielweise, die nie monoton wirkt. Die Soli zeugen von technischem Anspruch und sind präzise inszeniert. Hier lodert echtes Thrash-Feuer.

Stellenweise blitzt bei MEZZROW eine gewisse Verspieltheit durch – und genau das wird in diesem Song besonders deutlich. „Symphony Of Twisted Souls“ beginnt mit cleanen Gitarren. Doch das bleibt nicht lange so: Schon bald bricht das harte Riffing durch und reißt den Hörer mit. Zwei geschickt platzierte Gitarrensoli sorgen für Dynamik, während der Bass sich für einen Moment aus dem Hintergrund löst und mit einem markanten Lauf glänzt. Insgesamt ein Song mit mehr Komplexität, die sich in rhythmischen Wechseln manifestiert. Der Song zeigt, dass MEZZROW nicht nur auf rohe Energie setzt, sondern auch auf Struktur und Tiefe.

MEZZROW überraschen hier mit einem spannenden Bruch: Zwar sprintet der Song zunächst mit stringenter Aggressivität nach vorne, ganz im Sinne klassischer Thrash-Tradition. Doch mittendrin öffnet sich plötzlich ein Fenster der Ruhe – ein Solo, gespielt mit schmeichelnden Gitarrenklängen. Dieser Kontrast verleiht dem Stück eine unerwartete Tiefe und zeigt, dass die Band auch atmosphärisch Akzente setzen kann.

Nach dem explosiven Vorstoß durch den kompromisslosen Song „The Moment To Arise“ erhebt sich mit „In Shadows Deep“ ein kolossales Midtempo-Monster. Der Song stampft voran, schwer und unaufhaltsam, und lässt die Erde förmlich beben. Es ist eine weitere Facette im Albumkonzept, die sich deutlich abhebt: weniger Geschwindigkeit, dafür mehr Wucht und Atmosphäre.

„Inside The Burning Twilight“ zündet wieder eine Hochgeschwindigkeitsrakete mit wahnsinniger Durchschlagskraft. Der Schlusstrack „Dominion Of The Dead“ imponiert noch mal mit einem progressiveren Aufbau und atmosphärischen Elementen.

Aber ich möchte euch die Single „Sleeping Cataclysm“ nicht vorenthalten. „Sleeping Cataclysm“ ist ein rasender Song, der mit unbändiger Energie voranschreitet. Doch zwischen all der Düsternis blitzen immer wieder melodische Leads auf, die wie Lichtstrahlen durch die Schatten schneiden.

Fazit

MEZZROW beweisen, dass auch Thrash Metal aus Schweden mehr als überzeugend sein kann. Mit Embrace The Awakening gelingt MEZZROW ein Album, das sich tief in der Tradition des Bay-Area-Thrash verwurzelt, dabei aber keineswegs rückwärtsgewandt wirkt. Die Band zeigt sich spielfreudig, technisch versiert und überraschend vielseitig. Zwischen kompromissloser Härte und atmosphärischen Momenten entsteht ein Spannungsfeld, das das Album lebendig und eigenständig macht. Das Album Embrace The Awakening jedenfalls ist ein echter Knaller.

MEZZROW (Facebook) come from Sweden and have been guests on my playlist ‘METALHEADs new stuff’ for some time now. The band’s interpretation of thrash metal draws on the traditional sound of the Bay Area, but they haven’t completely ignored modern influences. Basically, they sound dark and aggressive, but they also garnish their sound with some melodic accents and appealing surprises here and there. The vocals are powerful and they offer also strong choruses. So let’s dive into the new album Embrace The Awakening.

The album’s dark atmosphere is evident from the very first notes. The opener begins with a lengthy, suspenseful introduction before transitioning into a highly dynamic, fast-paced section. The guitar work is particularly noteworthy: crisp riffs meet a pleasantly varied playing style that never seems monotonous. The solos demonstrate technical skill and are precisely staged. This is where real thrash fire blazes.

At times, MEZZROW reveals a certain playfulness—and this is particularly evident in this song. „Symphony Of Twisted Souls“ begins with clean guitars. But that doesn’t last long: soon, hard riffing breaks through and carries the listener away. Two cleverly placed guitar solos provide dynamics, while the bass breaks away from the background for a moment and shines with a striking run. Overall, this is a song with more complexity, which manifests itself in rhythmic changes. The song shows that MEZZROW relies not only on raw energy, but also on structure and depth.

MEZZROW surprise us here with an exciting break: at first, the song sprints forward with relentless aggression, in keeping with classic thrash tradition. But in the middle, a window of calm suddenly opens—a solo played with soothing guitar sounds. This contrast gives the piece an unexpected depth and shows that the band can also set atmospheric accents.

After the explosive advance of the uncompromising song „The Moment To Arise,“ „In Shadows Deep“ rises like a colossal mid-tempo monster. The song stomps forward, heavy and unstoppable, literally making the earth shake. It’s another facet of the album concept that stands out clearly: less speed, but more power and atmosphere.

„Inside The Burning Twilight“ ignites another high-speed rocket with insane impact. The final track, „Dominion Of The Dead,“ impresses once again with a more progressive structure and atmospheric elements.

But I don’t want to deprive you of the single „Sleeping Cataclysm.“ „Sleeping Cataclysm“ is a frenzied song that races forward with unbridled energy. Yet amid all the darkness, melodic leads flash repeatedly, cutting through the shadows like rays of light.

Conclusion

MEZZROW prove that thrash metal from Sweden can also be more than convincing. With Embrace The Awakening, MEZZROW have created an album that is deeply rooted in the tradition of Bay Area thrash, but by no means seems backward-looking. The band is enthusiastic, technically skilled, and surprisingly versatile. Between uncompromising heaviness and atmospheric moments, a tension arises that makes the album lively and unique. In any case, the album Embrace The Awakening is a real blast.
