Nach sage und schreibe 10 Jahren lassen es 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 endlich mal wieder krachen. Das neue Album 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤 erscheint am kommenden Freitag via Nuclear Blast. 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 sind eine Legende und gehören zu den BIG FOUR des Thrash Metal, welche in den 80’er Jahren zu den vier prägendsten, einflussreichsten und stilbildendsten Thrash‑Metal‑Bands gehörten, und zwar neben METALLICA, MEGADETH und SLAYER.

Mit diesen Bands bin ich aufgewachsen und natürlich verbindet man mit ihnen eine ganz besondere Zeit und Erlebnisse. So war es auch ein Höhepunkt, als ich am 30. September 2025 im Rockland Music Store Witten 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗-Bassist Frank Bello live in Farbe und Ton persönlich kennenlernen durfte, als er dort im Rahmen seiner Bass-Clinic-Tour seine Künste am Bass präsentiert hat. Darüber hinaus hat er noch lustige und interessante Geschichten erzählt. Einem Star der Szene so nah sein zu können, war ein überragendes und unvergessliches Erlebnis.

Umso größer ist die Freude und Aufregung, dass 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 wieder mit einem neuen Album am Start sind. Im Laufe des Jahres 2022 stürzte sich die Band mit vollem Eifer in die Aufnahmen zu 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤 und arbeitete dabei in Dave Grohls Studio 606 in Los Angeles. . Das Ergebnis, produziert von Jay Ruston und Anthrax, ist ein Album, das ebenso wütend, aggressiv und lebendig ist wie ihre gefeiertsten Werke.

Scott Ian erinnert sich:

Es war eine ziemliche Reise – von der Entstehung dieses Albums bis zu seiner Fertigstellung. Eigentlich wollten wir es schon 2020 aufnehmen, doch das Universum hatte für uns alle andere Pläne. Nach der Pandemie konnten wir endlich wieder als Band zusammenfinden. Als wir begannen, an der Platte zu arbeiten, waren wir einfach nur glücklich, wieder gemeinsam in einem Raum zu sein. Es war so aufregend, dass es sich gewissermaßen wie eine Wiedergeburt anfühlte. All diese Energie und all diese Emotionen sind in die Musik eingeflossen. Die Angst, aus unserem gewohnten Leben herausgerissen zu werden, und die Freude über unser Wiedersehen sind darin gleichermaßen spürbar. Der Titel ‚Cursum Perficio‘ fühlt sich typisch nach ANTHRAX an. Er spiegelt genau das wider, was wir durchgemacht haben, um schließlich den Punkt zu erreichen, an dem wir die Platte fertigstellen konnten.

Frank Bello hat folgendes zu sagen:

Wir haben alles gegeben. Wir wissen wirklich, wer wir als ANTHRAX sind, was uns antreibt und was wir tun müssen. Ich glaube nicht, dass irgendjemand weiß, was als Nächstes kommt – aber wir sind hungriger denn je. Von jetzt an werden wir jede verdammte Minute Vollgas geben.

It’s For The Kids

Beginnen möchte ich mit dem Song „It’s For The Kids“, bei dem die 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 typischen Vibes durchkommen. Die Vocals von Joey Belladonna sind ohnehin unverkennbar. Mit seinem treibenden druckvollen Beat knallt der Song voll durch und der Breakdown-Part kommt ebenfalls stark rüber, bevor das Gitarrensolo abgefeuert wird. Nur frage ich mich, wo der Bass bleibt. Der ist kaum wahrnehmbar und tritt erst deutlicher im Instrumentalpart in Aktion, wo dann auch ein rasendes Gitarrensolo abgefeuert wird.

Frank Bello über den Song:

„It’s For The Kids!“ ist ein harter, treibender Song mit einem großen, eingängigen Refrain, eine Mischung aus klassischem ANTHRAX und dem Sound von heute. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, ihn live zu spielen! Auch die Dreharbeiten zum Video haben riesigen Spaß gemacht, wenn auch bei eisiger Kälte! Es ist ein großartiges, energiegeladenes Video, in dem eine ganze Menge fantastischer ANTHRAX-Fans an einem eiskalten Tag in Pennsylvania eine tolle Zeit haben. Der Metal hat uns alle warmgehalten.

Kurz und knackig, wie es eigentlich auf viele Thrash Metal Songs zutrifft, passt bei den Songs auf 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤 nicht so ganz. Knackig trifft auf jeden Fall zu, aber die Songs haben alles andere als kurze Spielzeiten. „It’s For The Kids“ ist mit 04:29 der kürzeste Track auf dem Album, vom (überflüssigen) Album-Intro mal abgesehen.

„The Long Goodbye“ öffnet nach dem Intro dann vollständig den Vorhang und bläst zum Start der 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗-Show. Wuchtiges Drumming und massive Riffs lassen den Boden erzittern. Das macht schon einmal einen sehr guten Eindruck. Es folgt ein fließender Wechsel in den dynamischen Teil des Songs und die Vocals steigen in Geschehen ein. Insgesamt ist es noch ein zurückhaltender Song, der nicht sehr aggressiv klingt, sondern eher melodisch mit einem versöhnlichen, aber auch leicht melancholischen Touch.

Ab der dritten Minute begeistert eine astreiner Instrumentalpart, in dem Drums und Gitarren eine verdammt geile Performance abliefern. Daran erkennt man halt auch die Qualität einer Band. Und diese Qualität zieht sich durch das gesamte Album. Meiner Meinung nach hat sich die Band als Ziel gesetzt, ihren typischen Anthrax Sound präsent zu machen, aber gleichzeitig neue Akzente zu setzen ohne sich in Sackgassen zu manövrieren. So klingt auch „Everbody’s Got A Plan“, ähnlich wie bei „It’s For The Kids“ wunderbar vertraut, aber immer noch so frisch, als wären Jahrzehnte nicht vergangen.

Im Juli ballerten 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 ihre Single „The Edge Of Perfection“ raus. Totale Überraschung angesichts der Machart des Songs. Aus den vergangenen Jahrzehnten weiß man ja, dass 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 sich nicht gerne auf einen Stil festlegen ließen. Die sehr lange Spielzeit von sieben Minuten von „The Edge Of Perfection“ macht natürlich neugierig.

Zunächst bleibt es bei der Einführung des Songs sehr ruhig, doch es ist nur die Ruhe vor dem Sturm, der den Hörer dann eiskalt erwischt. Blastbeats fegen die Ruhe einfach brutal hinweg. Melodische Leads begleiten das höllische Geschehen. Chöre erklingen im Hintergrund und dann erfolgt der Bruch in den eigentlichen Song, der eine ganz eigene Rhythmik in den Strophen verfolgt. Der Song ist von dynamischen Wechseln geprägt und geht neue Wege.

Ich würde dem Song sogar progressive Züge attestieren, weil viele verschiedene musikalische Szenerien aufgemacht werden, wobei alles handwerklich hochklassig umgesetzt wird. Das versteht sich ja quasi von selbst. „The Edge Of Perfection“ ist ein epischer Metal Track und unterscheidet sich deutlich von der ersten Single „It’s For The Kids“. Es ist ein Song, der überrascht, aber einfach unglaublich genial umgesetzt wurde. Mit jedem Hören fand ich ihn besser und besser.

Der lyrische Inhalt des Songs ist übrigens äußerst interessant. Hierzu mal ein Kommentar vom Gitarristen Scott Ian:

Das ist der Predator unter den Anthrax-Songs. Ich glaube, es ist der beste Song, den wir je geschrieben haben, und das Beste, woran ich kreativ je beteiligt war. Was ist das stärkste Gefühl, das mich mehr als alles andere bewegt?

Natürlich ist es die Liebe. Nichts berührt mich so sehr wie das tiefe Gefühl, das mir meine Frau und mein Sohn geben. Ich werde den Rest meines Lebens an dieser Schwelle verbringen. Das hier gehört mir, aber es gibt viele Möglichkeiten, es zu ruinieren. In früheren Phasen meines Lebens habe ich es ruiniert, aber genau das hat mich dorthin gebracht, wo ich heute bin.

Liebe ist Perfektion, und ich genieße es, mich an ihrer Grenze zu bewegen. Ich will nicht, dass sich alles immer nur um denselben Mist dreht. Auf dieser Platte stecken jede Menge Liebe, jede Menge Spaß und ein bisschen Hass.

Dagegen wirkt so ein Song wie „Infectious“ fast simpel. Neben seinem stampfenden Rhythmus und den fetten Riffs lebt der Song vor allem von den Vocals. Der Song hat seinen Charme, aber gehört nicht zu meinen Highlights auf dem Album.

„NYC 93“ surft dann wieder auf der nostalgischen Welle, die mit Karacho einschlägt. Das trifft wieder voll meinen Geschmack und macht richtig Laune. Ein fantastischer Song, um fantastisch abzurocken und auszuflippen. Und ich liebe es, wenn ein Song am Ende nochmals einen draufsetzt und völlig eskaliert.

Der Titeltrack „Cursum Perficio“ ist ebenfalls ein Monstersong wie „The Edge Of Perfection“, nur nicht so hart, sondern eher rockiger ausgelegt. Er offenbart ein genauso augeklügeltes Songwriting, womit die sechs Minuten Spieldauer sehr kurzweilig erscheinen.

Ich empfinde die Bandbreite, mit der 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 dem Album agieren, ungemein unterhaltsam. Es gibt Songs, die kommen locker rockig rüber und es gibt harte Banger, die mit der vollen metallischen Härte zuschlagen. Da wäre z.B. der Song „T.O.M.B.“ zu erwähnen, wo auch endlich mal Frank Bello mit seinem Bass schön zur Geltung kommt. Und hier bin ich aber auch an einem kleinen Kritikpunkt angelangt. Der Bass kommt mir insgesamt bei der Produktion einen Hauch zu kurz.

Wenn man so einen begnadeten Basser am Start hat, dann will ich den auch hören. Aber der Bass ist meinem Empfinden nach oft zu sehr in den Hintergrund gerückt und man muss oft genau hinhören, wenn man ihn bewusst wahrnehmen möchte. Es gibt zwar Passagen, wo er präsenter ist, aber im Gesamtbild hätte ich mir mehr Bühne für Frank Bello gewünscht.

Fazit

𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 haben eine schwierige Mission vor sich gehabt. Wenn man als legendäre Band zurückkehrt, die in ihren Anfängen die Metal-Szene maßgeblich mitgestaltet haben und nun seit dem letzten Album 10 Jahre Pause hat verstreichen lassen, hat man mit Erwartungshaltungen zu kämpfen; sowohl mit den eigenen, als auch mit denen der Fans.

Ich bin der Meinung, dass 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 das Beste daraus gemacht haben. 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤 ist ein großartiges Album geworden, wenn…. ja wenn man als Fan nicht in alten Strukturen verharrt. Denn für Fans des schmutzigen rohen Thrash Metals ist das Album weniger geeignet, als für diejenigen, die einer altgedienten legendären Band auch Entwicklungen zugestehen.

𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 haben auf ihrem Album 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤 eine Reise vollzogen. Sie haben sich in ihre Vergangenheit begeben und die Reise bis in die Gegenwart vollzogen. Dabei haben sie sich sehr kreativ ausgetobt und Songs erschaffen, die einen Bogen von der Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart gekonnt spannen ohne ihn zu überspannen. Sie haben auf 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤 viele Pfeile im Köcher, die voll ins Schwarze treffen. Der typische 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗-Style klingt durch, mal mehr, mal weniger konsequent. Doch sie bewegen sich auf einem durchgehend hohen Level, was im Ergebnis eine verdammt unterhaltsames Album generiert. 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 haben mit 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤 ihre Mission vortrefflich erfüllt.

After a staggering 10 years, 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 are finally ready to tear it up again. The new album, 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤, drops this coming Friday via Nuclear Blast. 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 are legends and part of the „Big Four“ of thrash metal—alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer—ranking among the most defining, influential, and genre-shaping bands of the 1980s.

I grew up with these bands, and of course they’re tied to a very special time in my life and to countless memories. One of the absolute highlights came on September 30, 2025, when I had the chance to meet 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 bassist Frank Bello in person — live and up close — at the Rockland Music Store in Witten. He stopped there as part of his bass‑clinic tour, showcasing his skills and sharing funny and fascinating stories along the way. Being so close to a true icon of the scene was an outstanding and unforgettable experience.

The excitement and anticipation are all the greater now that 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 are back with a new album. Throughout 2022, the band threw themselves wholeheartedly into recording 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤 at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 in Los Angeles. The result—produced by Jay Ruston and Anthrax—is an album that is just as furious, aggressive, and vibrant as their most celebrated works.

Scott Ian remember:

It was quite a journey from the inception of this album to its completion. We were supposed to make this in 2020, but the universe had other plans for everyone. After the Pandemic, we got to be a band again. When we started working on the record, we were just happy to be in a room together. It was so exciting that it was like being reborn in a way. All of that energy and emotion went into the music. The fear of being forced out of our lives and the joy of coming back together are present. The title ‘Cursum Perficio’ feels like ANTHRAX. It resembled what we went through to get to the point of finishing the record.

Frank Bello explains:

We left it all on the table.We really know who we are as ANTHRAX, what turns us on, and what we need to do. I don’t think anybody knows what’s next, but we’re hungrier than ever. From here on out, we’re going to go full throttle for every fucking minute.

It’s For The Kids

I’d like to start with the song „It’s For The Kids“, which captures that signature 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 vibe—and Joey Belladonna’s vocals are unmistakable, as always. Driven by a powerful, propulsive beat, the track really packs a punch, and the breakdown hits hard before the guitar solo kicks in. My only question is: where is the bass? It’s barely audible, only becoming more prominent during the instrumental section, which also features a blistering guitar solo.

Frank Bello about the song:

„It’s For The Kids!“ is a heavy, driving song with a big hook chorus-a combination of classic ANTHRAX and current- I can’t wait to play it live! Had a (cold!) blast filming the video too. It’s a great, energy packed video with a bunch of amazing ANTHRAX fans having a good time on a freezing day in Pennsylvania. The metal kept us all warm.

The „short and punchy“ style typical of many thrash metal songs doesn’t quite apply to the tracks on 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤. „Punchy“ certainly fits, but the songs are anything but short; „It’s For The Kids“ is the shortest track on the album with a playing time of 04:29 (apart from the (superfluous) album intro).

After the intro, „The Long Goodbye“ fully raises the curtain and kicks off the 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 show. Powerful drumming and massive riffs make the ground shake—an impressive start. A smooth transition leads into the song’s dynamic section as the vocals kick in. Overall, it remains a restrained track; it doesn’t sound overly aggressive, but rather melodic, with a touch that is both conciliatory and slightly melancholic.

From the three-minute mark, a fantastic instrumental section kicks in, with the drums and guitars delivering a killer performance. That’s exactly where you can spot a band’s quality…and that quality runs through the entire album. In my opinion, the band set out to showcase their signature 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 sound while introducing new elements, all without painting themselves into a corner. As a result, „Everybody’s Got A Plan“, much like „It’s For The Kids“, feels wonderfully familiar yet remains as fresh as if decades hadn’t passed at all.

In July, 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 unleashed their single „The Edge Of Perfection“, a total surprise given the song’s composition. After all, we know from past decades that Anthrax never liked to be pigeonholed into a single style. Naturally, the track’s lengthy seven-minute runtime piques one’s curiosity.

The song’s introduction starts off very quietly, but it is merely the calm before the storm that then catches the listener off guard. Blast beats brutally sweep away the tranquility. Melodic leads accompany the hellish onslaught. Choirs ring out in the background, followed by a shift into the song proper, which employs a distinctive rhythm in the verses. Characterized by dynamic shifts, the song breaks new ground.

I would even attribute progressive elements to „The Edge Of Perfection“, as it opens up a variety of musical landscapes—all executed with superb craftsmanship. That goes without saying, of course. „The Edge Of Perfection“ is an epic metal track that differs significantly from the first single, „It’s For The Kids.“ It is a surprising song, yet one that has been executed with sheer brilliance. I found myself liking it more and more with every listen.

Here’s Ian’s comment on it:

It’s the apex predator of Anthrax songs. I think it’s the best song we’ve ever written and the best thing I’ve ever been a part of creatively. What’s the most powerful emotion that moves me more than anything? Of course, it’s love. Nothing moves me like the deep feeling that I get from my wife and son. I’m living on that edge for the rest of my life. This is mine, but there are a lot of ways to ruin it. I’ve ruined it in past iterations of my life, but it got me to where I am. Love is perfection, and I like being on the edge of it. I don’t want everything to be about all of the same shit. This record has a whole bunch of love, a whole bunch of fun, and a little hate

By comparison, a song like „Infectious“ seems almost simple. Beyond its stomping rhythm and heavy riffs, the track relies primarily on the vocals. It has its charm, but it isn’t one of the album’s highlights for me.

„NYC 93“ rides a wave of nostalgia that hits with tremendous force. It’s right up my alley and puts me in a great mood—a fantastic track for rocking out and going wild. And I love it when a song kicks things up a notch at the end and goes absolutely all out.

The title track „Cursum Perficio“ is another monster of a song, like „The Edge Of Perfection“, though it’s less heavy and leans more towards a rock sound. It showcases equally sophisticated songwriting, making the six-minute runtime fly by.

I find the stylistic range 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 displays on this album incredibly entertaining. There are tracks with a laid-back rock vibe alongside heavy bangers that hit with full-on metal intensity. A prime example is „T.O.M.B.“ a song where Frank Bello’s bass work finally gets a chance to shine. That said, I do have one minor criticism: the bass feels a bit underrepresented in the overall production.

When you have a bassist as gifted as Frank Bello, you want to hear him. To my ears, however, the bass is often pushed too far into the background; you really have to listen closely to pick it out. While there are passages where it’s more prominent, I would have liked to see Frank Bello given more of the spotlight in the overall mix.

Conclusion

𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 had a difficult mission ahead of them. When you return as a legendary band that played a key role in shaping the metal scene in its early days and have now had a 10-year break since their last album, you have to struggle with expectations; both with your own and with those of the fans.

I think 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 made the best of it. 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤 has become a great album if… yes, if you as a fan don’t stay in old structures. Because the album is less suitable for fans of dirty, raw Thrash Metal than for those who believe that a veteran, legendary band can develop after all the time passed by.

𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 have taken a journey on their album 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤. They have gone into their past and completed the journey to the present. They were very creative and created songs that skilfully draw a line from the past to the present without overstretching it. They have many arrows in their quiver that hit the bull’s eye. The typical 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 style sounds through, sometimes more, sometimes less consistent. But they operate at a consistently high level, which results in a highly entertaining album. 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐀𝐗 have fulfilled their mission excellently with 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙢 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤.
