𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 ist das Symphonic-Power-Metal-Projekt von Marco Garau (ehemals Komponist und Keyboarder bei Derdian von 2001 bis 2023). Das Debütalbum The Golden Pentacle erschien im Februar 2021, das zweite Album Battle of Ice im Januar 2023. Der finale Akt 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 wird am 24. Juli veröffentlicht. Alle Alben sind Konzeptalben, die auf der AMTORK SAGA basieren, einer Originalgeschichte von Marco Garau. Das Projekt endet mit zwei Konzerten in Tokio am 29. und 31. August 2026.

Marco Garau hat damit eine Vision umgesetzt, die im heutigen Genre selten geworden ist: eine vollständig durchkomponierte Fantasy‑Saga, getragen von neoklassischer Virtuosität, opernhafter Dramaturgie und einem unverkennbaren italienischen Melodieverständnis.

Wir sehen also, dass das Projekt ein großes Unterfangen war, eine lange Reise, die nun bald ihr Ende findet. Eigentlich schade, denn 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 erzählen mit hochklassigem Power Metal eine Fantasy-Geschichte, in der es um den klassischen Kampf von Gut gegen Böse geht. Es gilt einen bösen Zauberer zu bekämpfen, der nichts anderes im Sinn hat, als die Welt ins Chaos zu stürzen. Der König und sein treuer Berater wollen ihn daran hindern. Es entbrennt ein langer unerbittlicher Kampf, der mit allerlei magischen Artefakten ausgeführt wird. Sogar ein Eisdrache spielt eine entscheidende Rolle in diesem epischen Drama. Wer mehr darüber lesen möchte, der möge sich die Homepage der Band anschauen.

Ich habe mir auch die ersten beiden Alben dieser Trilogie angehört und ich muss sagen, dass diese Fantasygeschichte von Beginn an musikalisch hochwertig umgesetzt wurde. So klassisch wie die Geschichte, sind auch die Songs komponiert. Es wird hochmelodischer Power Metal geboten, wie man ihn kennt. Ich erinnere mich z.B. an die italienische Band RHAPSODY OF FIRE. Damals im Jahr 1997 hatten sie noch unter dem Namen RHAPSODY das Album „Legendary Tales“ veröffentlicht. Für mich ein ewiges Highlight im Bereich Power Metal. In der gleichen Liga spielen 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀.

Jetzt folgt mit 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 das grand Final und ich erwarte stilistisch keine Veränderungen am Sound. Ich würde mich allerdings darüber freuen, wenn manche Ansätze, die bereits in ersten beiden Akten Einzug gefunden haben, noch weiter verfolgt werden würden. Da wäre z.B. der dunkle Einschlag, auch gesanglich, wie z.B. beim Song „Never Ending Pain“ (The Golden Pentacle) oder das epische „Battle Of Ice“ vom gleichnamigen Album, in denen es vor allem gesanglich mal in eine andere finstere Richtung geht. Dies erweitert für mich das atmosphärische Konzept.

Nach einer Phase des Friedens bahn sich neues Unheil in der Saga an. Der alte Feind wurde immer noch nicht endgültig besiegt und eine neue dunkle Macht hat ebenfalls Ambitionen sich ins Geschehen einzumischen, um eigene Ziele zu erreichen. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 setzt nahtlos an die vorherigen Alben an und MAGIC OPERA servieren in vollem Galopp wunderschöne Melodien, doch was höre ich bereits im Opener „The Danger’s Growing Dark“? Dunkle Töne finden ca. bei der Hälfte ihren Weg ins Geschehen. Gesanglich gibt man sich hier schon variabler als auf den anderen beiden Alben.

„The Black Gem“ setzt die Geschichte fort und der dunkle unheilvolle Edelstein bringt sich ins Geschehen ein, dem zentralen magischen Artefakt in 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, dessen Macht dem Besitzer Unsterblichkeit bringen soll. Der Song transportiert die treibende Dynamik weiter und der gute Eindruck hinsichtlich der Vocals bestätigt sich weiter. 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 erschaffen im Song verschiedene Rollen, die die Atmosphäre verstärken. Es wird aber nicht zu wild oder chaotisch, sondern es ist dem Song sehr zuträglich. Darüber hinaus kann man sich weiterhin an schönen Keybordsolos erfreuen.

𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 bleiben auf dem Niveau und bieten sehr unterhaltsame Power Metal Kost, wobei sich manchmal auf dem über 60-minütigen Werk doch ein paar Längen einschleichen. Für mich ist z.B. die etwas kitschige Ballade „Fury Of The Storm“ eher langweilig und unspektakulär. Der Song plätschert so dahin und kann mich nicht so recht begeistern. Er bleibt zu gleichförmig und schafft es so nicht emotionale Tiefe bei mir zu erzeugen.

Dafür gibt es dann wieder Highlights wie z.B. die Flamenco Gitarren bei „Unholy Alliance“ mit anschließendem Keybordsolo. Solche Besonderheiten lassen den Hörer aufhorchen. Und auch in den anderen Songs trifft man auf Momente, die herausragen. Sogar der instrumentale Halbzeit-Track „Chaos Rising“ hört sich echt gut an.

In der zweiten Hälfte folgen weitere erstklassige Kompositionen, in denen man Z.B. weiterhin traumhaften Gitarrensolos lauschen darf. Ebensozeigt sich Sänger Anton Darusso fortwährend variabel und liefert so immer wieder neben seiner hochmelodischen Kunst auch dunklere Ausbrüche, die wie dramaturgische Farbtupfer wirken und die Fantasywelt lebendiger und glaubwürdiger machen. Sie sind sozusagen das Salz in der Suppe, damit es nicht zu fad klingt.

Fazit

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 ist ein würdiger und kraftvoller Abschluss der Amtork‑Saga. 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 bleiben ihrem hochmelodischen, neoklassisch geprägten Power‑Metal treu und liefern ein Finale, das sowohl erzählerisch als auch musikalisch überzeugt. Die dunkleren Akzente, die bereits in den ersten beiden Akten ansatzweise genutzt wurden, werden hier weiter ausgebaut und sorgen für mehr atmosphärische Tiefe und und verleihen dem Album eine dramatische Schärfe, die den letzten Akt noch einmal richtig groß werden lässt.

Zwar schleichen sich auf der über 60‑minütigen Reise vereinzelt Längen ein und nicht jeder Song erreicht die emotionale Wucht der stärksten Momente, doch die Vielzahl an Highlights, die variablen Vocals von Anton Darusso, die virtuosen Gitarren‑ und Keyboard‑Solos sowie die kleinen stilistischen Überraschungen halten das Album lebendig und spannend.

Am Ende bleibt mit 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 der Eindruck eines Projekts, das mit großer Hingabe und klarer Vision zu Ende geführt wurde. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 beschließt die Trilogie und führt zu einem epischen Ende, dass der Geschichte noch mal einen echten Höhepunkt beschert.

𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 is the symphonic power metal project of Marco Garau (formerly composer and keyboardist of Derdian from 2001 to 2023). The debut album The Golden Pentacle was released in February 2021, followed by the second album Battle of Ice in January 2023. The last act, 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, will be released on July 24. All albums are concept works based on the AMTORK SAGA, an original story written by Marco Garau. (The project will come to an end with two concerts in Tokyo on August 29 and 31, 2026.)

With this, Marco Garau has realized a vision that has become rare in today’s genre: a fully through‑composed fantasy saga, carried by neoclassical virtuosity, operatic dramaturgy, and an unmistakably Italian sense for melody.

We can clearly see that this project was a major undertaking — a long journey that is now approaching its end. It’s actually a pity, because 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 tell a fantasy story through high‑class power metal, centered around the classic battle between good and evil. A wicked sorcerer must be defeated, a figure who seeks nothing less than to plunge the world into chaos. The king and his loyal advisor try to stop him. A long and relentless struggle unfolds, fought with all manner of magical artifacts. Even an ice dragon plays a decisive role in this epic drama. Anyone who wants to read more about it should take a look at the band’s homepage.

I also listened to the first two albums of this trilogy, and I must say that this fantasy story has been executed with musical quality right from the beginning. As classical as the narrative is, so are the songs composed. What you get is highly melodic power metal in its familiar form. It reminds me, for example, of the Italian band RHAPSODY OF FIRE. Back in 1997, when they were still called RHAPSODY, they released the album Legendary Tales — for me an eternal highlight in the power‑metal genre. 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 play in the same league.

Now, with 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, the grand finale arrives, and I do not expect any stylistic changes to the overall sound. However, I would be pleased to see certain elements from the first two acts pursued even further. For example, the darker undertones — including vocally — as heard in “Never Ending Pain” (The Golden Pentacle) or the epic title track from Battle of Ice, where the vocals venture into a more sinister direction. These moments expand the atmospheric concept for me.

After a period of peace, new calamity begins to stir within the saga. The old enemy has still not been fully defeated, and a new dark force is now eager to interfere in the events to pursue its own goals. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 picks up seamlessly where the previous albums left off, and 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 charge forward with beautiful melodies at full gallop — but what do I hear already in the opener “The Danger’s Growing Dark”? Darker tones emerge around the halfway mark. Vocally, the band already shows more variation here than on the previous two albums.

“The Black Gem” continues the story, introducing the dark and ominous gemstone — the central magical artifact in 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, whose power is said to grant immortality to its bearer. The song carries the driving momentum forward, and the strong impression regarding the vocals is further confirmed. 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 create different vocal roles within the track, enhancing the atmosphere without ever becoming chaotic or overdone — it all serves the song remarkably well. On top of that, listeners can once again enjoy beautifully crafted keyboard solos.

𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 maintain their level of quality and deliver highly entertaining power metal, although a few stretches of this over 60‑minute work do feel a bit long. For me, the cheesy ballad “Fury of the Storm” is somewhat dull and unspectacular. The song drifts along without truly captivating me — it remains too uniform and therefore fails to create any emotional depth.

But then there are highlights again, such as the flamenco guitars in “Unholy Alliance“, followed by a keyboard solo. Details like these make the listener sit up and take notice. And even in the other songs, you encounter moments that stand out. Even the instrumental mid‑album track “Chaos Rising” sounds genuinely strong.

In the second half, more first‑class compositions follow, including further beautiful guitar solos. Vocalist Anton Darusso also continues to show nice versatility, delivering not only his highly melodic performance but also darker outbursts that act like dramatic color accents, making the fantasy world more vivid and believable. They are, so to speak, the salt in the soup — essential to keep the music from sounding bland.

Conclusion

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 is a worthy and powerful conclusion to the Amtork Saga. 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 remain true to their highly melodic, neoclassically inspired power‑metal style and deliver a finale that convinces both narratively and musically. The darker accents, already hinted at in the first two acts, are further developed here, adding greater atmospheric depth and giving the album a dramatic sharpness that makes this final chapter truly shine.

Although a few stretches of this over 60‑minute journey feel somewhat long and not every song reaches the emotional impact of the strongest moments, the sheer number of highlights, Anton Darusso’s versatile vocals, the virtuosic guitar and keyboard solos, and the small stylistic surprises keep the album lively and engaging.

In the end, 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 leave the impression of a project brought to completion with great dedication and a clear vision. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 concludes the trilogy and leads it to an epic finale that gives the story one last true highlight.
