GODARK (Facebook) stammen aus Portugal und sind nun mit ihrem zweiten Album Omniscience am Start. Aufgefallen sind sie mir mit ihrer Single“ Leaving Out“, welche mir auf Anhieb super gefallen hat und somit direkt in die Playlist ‚METALHEADs new stuff‘ gelandet ist. Unbestritten haben wir es hier mit absolut hochwertigem melodischen Death Metal zu tun, der absolut durchdacht ist und konzeptionell spannend aufgebaut ist. Sicherlich wird das Genre hier nicht neu erfunden, aber das macht überhaupt nichts, wenn es sich so großartig anhört.

Das Debüt Forward We March aus dem Jahr 2020 klang schon ganz ordentlich und legte grob die Richtung fest. Doch das neue Album Omniscience hat ein ganz anderes Level erreicht und ist in allen Belangen so viel größer geworden.

Die portugiesische Band gestaltet das Album rund um das Thema Allwissenheit und bewegt sich dabei zwischen absolutem Bewusstsein, Zweifel und der Suche nach Sinn. Auffällig sind die überdurchschnittlichen Spielzeiten der einzelnen Tracks, was den Schwierigkeitsgrad weiter erhöht. Doch hört euch mal den Brecher „Leaving Out“ an, der so wundervoll melancholisch zart beginnt, bevor das Unwetter hereinbricht. Die musikalische Bandbreite in Verbindung mit einem monumentalen Soundkonzept ist beeindruckend. Die Balance zwischen gnadenloser Brutalität und einer ungemein intensiven epischen Aura ist stimmig konstruiert und von der Band imposant umgesetzt. Um dem ganzen noch den letzten Schliff zu verpassen, bauen GODARK einige symphonische Elemente mit ein.

GODARK halten dieses Niveau tatsächlich auf dem gesamten Album. Es gibt keinen Durchhänger bei den neuen Tracks. Die Reise ist von vorne bis hinten ein großartiges Erlebnis mit einer gesunden Variation an verschiedenen Stilmitteln und musikalischen Ausdrücken. Die musikalischen Stürme oder die brachialen Erdbeben werden immer wieder mit leichteren melodischen eingängigen Passagen verziert. Es entsteht insgesamt ein Mix aus klassischem Death Metal mit einigen modernen Elementen.

Gesanglich gibt es auch gar nichts zu kritisieren. Die Growls klingen gut. Man verzichtet fast komplett auf cleane Gesänge und beschränkt sich größteneils auf extreme Vocals. Es gibt Leute, die das auch explizit bevorzugen. Ich persönlich komme auch sehr gut mit dem Mix von cleanen und extremen Vocals klar. Hier gibt es lediglich zwei Songs, wo das zu hören ist, und zwar beim dritten Song „Into The Hollow“ und beim letzten Track „Land Of Insane“.

Kommen wir zu einem der ganz großen Songs auf Omniscience, nämlich „Frozen In Time“. Der Song geht direkt in die Vollen und die melodischen Leads sorgen gleich für episches Feeling. Das Tempo wird immer mal wieder runtergebremst ohne den Fluss zu unterbrechen, aber dadurch kommen die schnellen stürmischen Parts noch mehr zur Geltung. Bei einer Spielzeit von über sieben Minuten muss einiges passieren und das tut es auch! Die Gitarrenarbeit ist traumhaft und die Drums sorgen für druckvolle Dynamik. Geschickt eingewobene symphonische Elemente bringen den letzten Schliff, um die Atmosphäre noch imposanter werden zu lassen.

Fazit

GODARK katapultieren sich mit Omniscience in eine andere Liga. Sie sind auf einem Niveau angelangt, dass qualitativ über jeden Zweifel erhaben ist. Mit diesen Album braucht man sich hinter Szenegrößen keinesfalls verstecken. Die Balance zwischen stürmischen Eskapaden, erschütternden Erdbeben, melancholischen Abgründen und einer ungemein intensiven epischen Aura ist stimmig konstruiert und von der Band imposant umgesetzt. Es gibt besonders geniale Songs, die herausstechen, aber alle Songs sind von starker Qualität und mit einer top Produktion gewürdigt.

GODARK (Facebook) come from Portugal and are now releasing their second album, Omniscience. They caught my attention with their single “Leaving Out,” which I immediately loved and added to my “METALHEADs new stuff” playlist. There’s no doubt that this is high-quality melodic death metal that is well thought out and conceptually exciting. Sure, the genre isn’t being reinvented here, but that doesn’t matter at all when it sounds this great.

Their debut album Forward We March from 2020 sounded pretty good and roughly set the direction. But the new album Omniscience has reached a whole new level and has become so much bigger in every respect.

The Portuguese band has designed the album around the theme of omniscience, moving between absolute consciousness, doubt, and the search for meaning. The above-average playing times of the individual tracks are striking, which further increases the degree of difficulty. But listen to the banger “Leaving Out,” which begins so wonderfully melancholic and delicate before the storm breaks. The musical range in combination with a monumental sound concept is impressive. The balance between merciless brutality and an immensely intense epic aura is harmoniously constructed and impressively implemented by the band. To put the finishing touches on it all, GODARK incorporates some symphonic elements.

GODARK maintain this level throughout the entire album. There are no weak moments on the album. The journey is a great experience from start to finish, with a healthy variety of different stylistic devices and musical expressions. The musical storms or brutal earthquakes are repeatedly embellished with lighter, melodic, catchy passages. The overall result is a mix of classic death metal with some modern elements.

Vocally, there is nothing to criticize either. The growls sound impressive. Clean vocals are almost completely absent, with the band limiting themselves mostly to extreme vocals. There are people who explicitly prefer this. Personally, I’m also very comfortable with the mix of clean and extreme vocals. There are only two songs where this can be heard, namely the third song “Into The Hollow” and the last track “Land Of Insane.”

Let’s move on to one of the greatest songs on Omniscience, namely “Frozen In Time.” The song goes straight for the jugular, and the melodic leads immediately create an epic feeling. The tempo slows down every now and then without interrupting the flow, but this makes the fast, stormy parts stand out even more. With a playing time of over seven minutes a lot things happen. The guitar work is fantastic and the drums provide powerful dynamics. Skillfully woven symphonic elements add the finishing touch to make the atmosphere even more impressive.

Conclusion

With Omniscience, GODARK have catapulted themselves into a different league. They have reached a high level of quality. With this album, they have no need to hide behind the big names on the scene. The balance between stormy escapades, shattering earthquakes, melancholic abysses, and an incredibly intense epic aura is harmoniously constructed and impressively executed by the band. There are some particularly brilliant songs that stand out, but all the songs are of high quality and honored with top-notch production.
